Politics – Bihar Cabinet Expansion Signals Fresh Legislative Council Changes

Politics –  Former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar is expected to enter the state legislative council as political activity intensifies ahead of upcoming vacancies in the Upper House.

Bihar cabinet council expansion news

Patna is witnessing renewed political discussions after indications emerged that Bihar health minister Nishant Kumar could soon become a member of the state legislative council. Nishant, who recently joined the Bihar cabinet for the first time, is reportedly among the leading names being considered for nomination as several seats in the council are scheduled to fall vacant next month.

Vacancies Open Space for New Political Appointments

A total of 10 seats in the Bihar legislative council are expected to become vacant in June. The terms of nine members are set to conclude on June 28, while one position has already remained vacant since Nitish Kumar stepped down from the Upper House after securing election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this year.

Political observers believe the upcoming vacancies have created an opportunity for the ruling alliance to strengthen representation within the council. Sources familiar with the developments suggest that the election process for the vacant seats could begin before the end of May, once the official notification is issued by the Election Commission.

Deepak Prakash Also Likely to Receive Council Berth

Apart from Nishant Kumar, another prominent name being discussed is Deepak Prakash, son of Rashtriya Lok Morcha chief and Rajya Sabha MP Upendra Kushwaha. His possible entry into the legislative council is being viewed as part of broader political coordination within alliance partners in Bihar.

The anticipated nominations have attracted considerable attention because they may influence the balance of leadership within the state’s ruling coalition ahead of future electoral challenges. Political parties are closely monitoring the developments as the composition of the legislative council often plays an important role in shaping legislative strategy.

Opposition Raises Questions Over Deputy Chief Minister Status

Meanwhile, the Rashtriya Janata Dal has raised concerns regarding the official designation of senior Janata Dal (United) leaders Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav. RJD spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad alleged that discrepancies existed between two separate notifications issued by Bihar’s Cabinet Secretariat Department.

According to Ahmad, a notification released on April 15, the day Samrat Choudhary took oath as chief minister, identified both Chaudhary and Yadav as deputy chief ministers while also listing the departments assigned to them.

However, Ahmad claimed that another notification issued on May 7 referred to both leaders only as ministers and did not mention the deputy chief minister designation. The opposition leader argued that the omission raised questions regarding their official status within the government structure.

JD(U) Yet to Respond on Allegations

The ruling JD(U) has not yet issued any detailed clarification regarding the opposition’s claims over the notifications. Despite the controversy, government functioning in Bihar has continued without interruption, and no formal announcement has been made indicating any change in the positions held by the two senior leaders.

The latest political developments come at a crucial time for Bihar politics, with multiple parties preparing strategies ahead of future elections and leadership reshuffles. The expected legislative council elections are likely to remain a key focus in the coming weeks as parties finalize candidates and alliance discussions continue behind the scenes.
