JD(U) – Nitish Kumar Set for Uncontested Return as Party Chief
JD(U) – The Janata Dal (United) is poised to witness a familiar leadership structure as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar moves closer to securing another term as the party’s national president.

Nitish Kumar submitted his nomination papers on Thursday for the party’s top post for the 2025–28 tenure. With no other candidate entering the race, his re-election appears certain, pending the completion of formalities within the party’s internal electoral process.
Unopposed Election Likely After Withdrawal Deadline
According to party officials, Kumar is the only leader to have filed nomination papers for the president’s position. The deadline for withdrawal of nominations is set for March 22, after which he is expected to be formally declared elected without opposition. The official announcement is anticipated on March 24.
The party had initiated the election process on March 16, coinciding with Kumar’s recent election to the Rajya Sabha, further consolidating his position within both the party and national politics.
Nomination Filed by Senior Party Leaders
The nomination papers were submitted at the JD(U)’s central office in New Delhi by a group of senior leaders on Kumar’s behalf. Among those involved were working president Sanjay Kumar Jha, Bihar Rural Development Minister Shravan Kumar, and party MLC Sanjay Gandhi. The documents were handed over to the party’s returning officer and former Member of Parliament Aneel Prasad Hegde.
This collective show of support reflects the party leadership’s confidence in Kumar’s continued guidance.
Leadership Timeline and Previous Roles
Nitish Kumar has had a long association with the party’s top leadership role. He first took over as the national president in April 2016, succeeding senior leader Sharad Yadav. He was re-elected to the position in 2019 but stepped down a year later, allowing RCP Singh to assume the role.
In December 2023, Kumar once again took charge of the party, replacing Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh. His return marked a significant shift aimed at strengthening the party’s internal structure and political strategy.
Party Signals Stability and Internal Support
Speaking on the development, Sanjay Kumar Jha indicated that party members were keen on Kumar resuming full leadership responsibilities. He also noted that Kumar is expected to increase his presence at the party’s Delhi office, suggesting a more active role in national-level coordination.
The lack of contest for the president’s post underscores a unified stance within the party ranks, with leaders rallying behind Kumar’s leadership ahead of upcoming political challenges.
Possible Changes in Working President Role
Meanwhile, the position of national working president could soon become vacant. Jha is reportedly being considered for the post of Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. The current Deputy Chairman, Harivansh Narayan Singh, is nearing the end of his term on April 9 and has not been renominated to the Upper House.
If Jha assumes the new role, the party may need to appoint a new working president, potentially triggering further organizational adjustments within JD(U).
As the party prepares for the formal announcement, Nitish Kumar’s expected unopposed return signals continuity and stability in its leadership structure at a crucial time.
