Infrastructure – Vikramshila Bridge Collapse Disrupts Key Bihar Transport Corridor

Infrastructure – A significant portion of the Vikramshila Setu in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district caved in early Monday, severely affecting transport and daily movement across the region.

The incident has interrupted a vital route that connects Bhagalpur with Naugachhia, a link widely used to travel between northern and southern parts of the state. Authorities confirmed that a section of the bridge’s approach on the Bhagalpur side weakened before a large segment gave way and plunged into the Ganga River.

Sudden collapse during early hours

Officials reported that the collapse took place around 12:50 a.m., when a slab near pillar number 133 abruptly broke off and fell into the river below. The structural failure occurred without warning, triggering alarm among people present in the vicinity and forcing an immediate halt to traffic movement.

Although several vehicles were reportedly crossing the bridge at the time, a major accident was avoided. Police personnel and local administration officials acted quickly, clearing vehicles from the affected area moments before the section collapsed.

Administration responds swiftly

Bhagalpur District Magistrate Naval Kishore Chaudhary reached the site soon after being informed and reviewed the situation. He stated that ensuring public safety was the top priority, leading to a complete suspension of vehicular movement on the bridge until further notice.

Barricades have been placed at both ends to prevent access, and technical teams have been deployed to carry out a detailed inspection of the damage. Authorities are assessing the structural condition of the remaining portions of the bridge before deciding on further action.

Traffic diverted to alternative routes

Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Yadav confirmed that traffic has been rerouted through alternate paths. Commuters traveling between Bhagalpur, Naugachhia, and nearby Seemanchal areas are now being directed to longer routes via Munger and Sultanganj.

Officials have advised residents to follow the designated diversions and avoid spreading unverified information. The administration continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure safety and manage traffic flow effectively.

Impact on daily life and trade

The closure of the Vikramshila Setu is expected to have a widespread impact on both daily commuting and commercial activities. The bridge serves as a critical lifeline for thousands of people, including traders, transporters, and workers who rely on it for regular movement.

With longer travel distances now unavoidable, transportation costs and travel times are likely to increase. Local businesses that depend on smooth connectivity between regions may also face disruptions in the coming days.

Concerns over infrastructure safety

The collapse has once again drawn attention to the condition of aging infrastructure in the state. Questions are being raised about maintenance practices and the need for timely structural assessments of key public assets.

Experts believe that regular inspections and preventive measures are essential to avoid such incidents, especially on heavily used bridges. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the failure and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring public safety, restoring connectivity, and evaluating the structural stability of the remaining bridge sections.
