Crime – Man Arrested in Patna for Impersonating Top Enforcement Official
Crime – A man accused of repeatedly impersonating senior officials was taken into custody in Patna after allegedly posing as a high-ranking Enforcement Directorate officer and contacting a district magistrate.

A suspected con artist has been arrested in Bihar’s capital following allegations that he attempted to deceive a senior administrative officer by claiming to be a top official from a central investigation agency. The arrest was made after a complaint was lodged by the Bhojpur district administration, which grew wary of the caller’s claims.
Suspicious Call Triggers Complaint
The incident came to light when Bhojpur District Magistrate Tanai Sultania received a phone call on April 27 from a person introducing himself as the Director of the Enforcement Directorate. The tone and content of the conversation raised concerns, prompting the officer to alert the confidential section of his office. Acting swiftly, officials registered a formal complaint the following day in Ara, the district headquarters.
Authorities then formed a special team to probe the matter, focusing on identifying the caller and verifying the intent behind the communication.
Technical Tracking Leads to Arrest
Investigators relied on technical surveillance to trace the origin of the call. The mobile signal was tracked to Nageshwar Colony in Patna. With assistance from the Special Task Force, Bhojpur police carried out a targeted raid in the area and apprehended the suspect, identified as Abhishek Agarwal.
Police officials stated that the accused had allegedly developed a pattern of impersonating senior officers from central and state agencies to contact bureaucrats. His actions are now under scrutiny to determine whether he succeeded in influencing or defrauding any officials in recent months.
History of Impersonation Raises Concerns
This is not the first time Agarwal has faced such allegations. In 2022, he was involved in a high-profile case where he reportedly contacted then Bihar Director General of Police S K Singhal, falsely presenting himself as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. During that incident, he allegedly attempted to influence a case linked to a senior police officer.
Following instructions from the DGP at the time, the Economic Offences Unit registered a case related to the matter. The situation escalated when it emerged that the caller had been impersonating a constitutional authority to exert pressure in favor of a police official.
Links to Officials Under Investigation
During the earlier investigation, authorities uncovered photographs showing Agarwal in the company of several IAS and IPS officers, raising questions about his network and access. While it remains unclear whether these connections were formal or incidental, investigators are now re-examining these links as part of the ongoing probe.
Police sources indicate that efforts are underway to determine whether Agarwal had managed to deceive or manipulate any government officials through similar tactics in the recent past. Officials are also analyzing call records and digital evidence to map out the full extent of his activities.
Repeat Offense After Bail
After his arrest in the 2022 case, Agarwal was sent to jail but was later released on bail last year. His latest arrest has once again drawn attention to the risks posed by impersonation scams targeting government officials and institutions.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of verification protocols when dealing with sensitive communications, particularly those involving claims of authority from senior positions.
The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges depending on further findings.
