Kanwar Yatra – Yogi Adityanath Calls for Service, Discipline and Social Harmony

Kanwar Yatra – Kanwar Yatra remains a significant annual pilgrimage during Shravan, bringing large numbers of devotees together in their journey to offer Ganga water to Lord Shiva. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to people to view the pilgrimage not only as a religious tradition but also as an opportunity to promote social responsibility, cooperation, discipline and public service.

Social Harmony at the Heart of the Pilgrimage

In his message to the people of Uttar Pradesh, Adityanath said certain journeys in Indian tradition extend beyond religious observance and serve as examples of social and cultural values. He described the Kanwar Yatra as one such tradition, where crores of devotees come together through their faith in Lord Shiva.

The chief minister noted that pilgrims, commonly identified as Kanwariyas, share a common identity during the journey. Their saffron clothing, kanwars carried on their shoulders and devotion to Shiva bring them together, even though they may travel at different speeds. Their shared destination, he said, is to offer holy water to Mahadev.

A Tradition That Brings People Together

Adityanath said differences based on caste, social standing, language, region and economic circumstances become less significant during the pilgrimage. He described the Kanwar Yatra as an example of harmony and equality within Sanatan cultural traditions.

He also referred to the traditional account of Lord Shiva consuming deadly poison during the churning of the cosmic ocean to protect creation. According to the belief, Shiva became known as Neelkanth, while Ganga water was used in his abhishek to help soothe the effects of the poison. The offering of Ganga water to Shiva during Shravan has therefore acquired special religious significance.

Service and Self-Discipline

The chief minister said the pilgrimage carries broader lessons of austerity, service, self-control and cooperation. He emphasised that personal discipline can strengthen character, while service benefits society and collective unity contributes to national strength.

Adityanath also praised devotees who undertake the demanding journey despite physical challenges, including persons with disabilities. He said their determination and faith demonstrate the strength associated with the Kanwar Yatra.

Arrangements Focused on Devotee Safety

The Uttar Pradesh government, he said, is working to ensure that pilgrims can complete the journey safely and with dignity. Measures along the routes include cleanliness drives, organised camps, drinking-water facilities, medical assistance, toilets and adequate lighting.

Traffic arrangements and continuous monitoring through control rooms have also been planned. The government has additionally arranged floral showers to welcome Kanwariyas along the pilgrimage routes.

Appeal for Responsible Participation

Adityanath urged devotees and the wider public to make social responsibility an important part of the pilgrimage. He encouraged people to use environment-friendly kanwars and commit themselves to reducing plastic use.

He also asked people travelling along Kanwar routes to give priority to ambulances and school vehicles. According to the chief minister, greater awareness and a small act of caution can provide important assistance to people who need urgent passage.

The chief minister said the government would continue working for the convenience and safety of devotees, while maintaining the dignity of the religious tradition remains a shared responsibility. He said faith, discipline, restraint and service represent the central values of the Kanwar Yatra and reflect the message of public welfare associated with Lord Shiva.
