Road Safety – MCD Holds Raahgiri Day Event to Promote Cleanliness and Waste Segregation
Road Safety –The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) organised a Raahgiri Day programme at DLF Midtown Plaza on Shivaji Maharaj Marg in the Karampura Industrial Area of Moti Nagar, bringing residents and students together for activities centred on road safety, cleanliness and responsible waste management.
The Sunday event was conducted under the guidance of Dilkhush Meena, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Zone (Karol Bagh), in association with the Raahgiri Foundation and the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), according to an official press release.
Students and Residents Join Community Activities
More than 300 people took part in the programme, with school students making up a significant portion of the participants. Around 100 to 150 students attended the event and participated in a range of activities designed to combine public awareness with recreation.
Cycling sessions, fitness activities, interactive games and other engagement programmes were arranged during the event. The activities provided an opportunity for citizens, particularly young participants, to learn about civic responsibilities while taking part in an open community programme.
Focus on Waste Segregation at Source
Waste management remained one of the key themes of the awareness campaign. The MCD urged residents to separate waste at the point where it is generated instead of mixing different types of waste before disposal.
Officials also highlighted the importance of making segregation a routine household practice. The campaign carried the message, “Don’t throw in haste. Segregate your waste”, with the aim of encouraging residents to think about proper waste disposal as part of their everyday responsibilities.
The initiative was linked to cleanliness efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission, with citizens being encouraged to help prevent littering and maintain cleaner public areas.
Civic Participation Seen as Key to Cleaner Delhi
The MCD stressed that maintaining clean and safe neighbourhoods requires regular participation from residents rather than relying only on civic authorities. The programme also sought to encourage children and young people to become more aware of issues such as road safety, waste disposal and environmental cleanliness.
Through community-based events such as Raahgiri Day, the civic body aims to encourage residents to take a more active role in maintaining public spaces. The MCD appealed to citizens to support its cleanliness programmes and follow responsible waste disposal practices.
Appointment Letters Handed Over to 187 Candidates
The Raahgiri Day programme followed another MCD event held on Saturday at the Kedarnath Sahni Auditorium in the Civic Centre. An appointment letter distribution ceremony was organised at the venue, with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta attending as the Chief Guest and Mayor Pravesh Wahi serving as the Guest of Honour.
During the ceremony, Gupta distributed appointment letters to 187 newly appointed candidates. The group included 17 Special Educators, according to the civic body’s release.
Medical Screening Portal Also Launched
The Chief Minister also launched a Medical Screening Portal during the ceremony. The platform is intended to support medical examinations and health monitoring of children enrolled in schools operated by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The launch was presented as part of efforts to strengthen monitoring of students’ health in MCD-run schools. Together, the appointment ceremony and the Raahgiri Day programme highlighted separate civic priorities, including public services, school support, cleanliness and community participation.
