Parliament – BJP Alleges Opposition Protests Have Hampered Monsoon Session Proceedings

Parliament – The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday accused the Congress and its INDIA bloc allies of repeatedly disrupting the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, claiming that continuous protests have affected legislative discussions and prevented several key issues from being debated in detail.

The allegations were made during a press briefing at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi by the party’s national spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Sambit Patra. He said repeated interruptions during parliamentary proceedings have resulted in the loss of valuable time meant for legislative business and public discussions. According to Patra, the functioning of Question Hour and Zero Hour has been significantly affected since the session began, limiting Members of Parliament from raising matters related to their constituencies.

BJP Raises Concerns Over Parliamentary Functioning

Patra stated that every session of Parliament involves substantial public expenditure and is expected to provide lawmakers with an opportunity to debate national issues and proposed legislation. However, he alleged that the Opposition’s demonstrations have prevented normal proceedings on several occasions.

He further claimed that discussions on multiple Bills have either been delayed or held without detailed deliberation because of repeated disruptions inside both Houses. According to him, such interruptions reduce the effectiveness of Parliament and impact public understanding of important legislative reforms.

Allegations of Selective Political Approach

The BJP spokesperson also criticised the Congress over what he described as an inconsistent stand on issues related to examination paper leaks and student protests. Patra alleged that the party reacts strongly to such incidents in some states while remaining silent when similar controversies emerge in states governed by Congress or its allies.

Referring to reported remarks attributed to Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge regarding alleged irregularities in a police constable recruitment examination, Patra questioned the Congress leadership’s response. He also alleged that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had not commented on the matter.

JPSC Examination Issue Mentioned

Patra further referred to the alleged paper leak controversy surrounding the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examination. He claimed that Congress leaders had not publicly highlighted the issue in Parliament and alleged that the party’s response reflected a selective political approach rather than a consistent position on students’ concerns.

According to the BJP leader, public representatives should address examination-related issues uniformly regardless of the state in which they occur.

BJP Says Important Bills Needed Wider Discussion

Speaking about legislative business, Patra said repeated protests affected detailed discussions on several important Bills. He cited the Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Registration of Birth and Death (Amendment) Bill, 2026 as examples of legislation that, according to him, deserved more extensive debate before passage.

He argued that meaningful parliamentary discussions allow citizens to better understand proposed legal changes and help strengthen the democratic process.

Remarks on Parliament Complex Protest

Patra also criticised a recent Opposition protest held inside the Parliament complex concerning allegations related to donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. He alleged that the demonstration offended religious sentiments by depicting a person dressed as a Hindu sadhu in a manner that, according to the BJP, conveyed an inappropriate message.

He said such portrayals could create negative perceptions about members of the Hindu religious community. Patra further argued that religious figures from any faith should be treated with respect during political demonstrations and maintained that such issues should be handled responsibly.

The Congress and other Opposition parties have been protesting during the Monsoon Session over several issues, while the BJP has maintained that uninterrupted parliamentary proceedings are necessary to ensure detailed discussions on legislation and matters of public importance.
