Shivling – Can a Shivling be kept at home? This question becomes especially common during the holy month of Sawan, when many devotees prepare their homes for Lord Shiva’s worship. Hindu scriptures state that keeping a Shivling at home is considered appropriate, provided certain traditional guidelines are followed regarding its size, placement and daily worship.
Scriptures Describe Conditions for Keeping a Shivling
Religious texts including the Shiv Purana and the Skanda Purana mention that devotees may install a Shivling in their home temple. However, the scriptures recommend that the Shivling should remain small, ideally no larger than the size of a person’s thumb, which is generally around two to three inches in height. Maintaining this traditional size is considered important while setting up a home shrine.
The scriptures also emphasize that installing a Shivling carries the responsibility of offering regular worship. Daily prayers and proper care are regarded as essential parts of maintaining its sanctity inside the home.
Recommended Types of Shivling for Home Worship
According to Gorakhpur-based priest Pandit Sujeet Ji Maharaj, two varieties of Shivling are considered especially suitable for household worship: the Parad Shivling and the Narmadeshwar Shivling. Both hold significant importance in Hindu traditions and are widely worshipped by devotees across the country.
He also advises that the Jaladhari, the channel through which water offered during abhishek flows, should face the north direction. In addition to the Shivling, placing idols of the Shiv Parivar in the home temple is also regarded as beneficial during daily worship.
Importance of the Narmadeshwar Shivling
The Narmadeshwar Shivling occupies a unique place in Hindu beliefs. It is traditionally believed that this form of Shivling does not require elaborate consecration rituals before being installed at home. Devotees can respectfully bring it from the banks of the Narmada River and place it directly in their prayer room.
Religious belief holds that Lord Shiva blessed the Narmada River by declaring that every stone found along its banks would represent his divine form. Because of this belief, Narmadeshwar Shivlings are regarded as Swayambhu, meaning self-manifested, and are considered naturally sacred.
Why the Parad Shivling Is Highly Revered
A Parad Shivling is crafted from mercury and is considered both rare and spiritually significant. It has long been associated with traditional Hindu worship and is valued for its religious importance.
According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping a Parad Shivling is believed to invite prosperity, good health, financial well-being and respect in life. Many devotees also believe that regular prayers before a Parad Shivling help reduce the adverse effects connected with the Navagrahas, or the nine planetary influences described in Hindu astrology.
Daily Worship Practices to Follow
Religious traditions recommend observing a few simple practices while worshipping a Shivling at home. During Jalabhishek, devotees are advised to face the north direction while offering water. Since the Shivling is kept inside the home temple, water should be offered every day as part of regular worship.
Offering fresh bel leaves, whenever available, is also considered an important part of Lord Shiva’s worship. Devotees traditionally chant the sacred mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” while performing the abhishek. The daily ritual is generally concluded with the aarti of Lord Shiva, completing the worship in accordance with established Hindu customs.
