Cricket – Pakistan Face Major Setback as Shan Masood Ruled Out of Second Test
Cricket – Pakistan have suffered a significant setback ahead of the second Test against the West Indies after experienced batter Shan Masood was ruled out with a finger injury. The left-handed batter picked up the injury during the opening Test, leaving the visitors with another selection challenge as they attempt to level the two-match series.
Pakistan will head into the second Test without Shan Masood after he injured the index finger of his left hand during the first match against the West Indies in Trinidad. The injury occurred when a delivery from fast bowler Jayden Seales struck his hand while Pakistan were batting in their first innings. Despite the setback, Masood made an impressive contribution in the opening Test by scoring 109 runs in the first innings before adding just three runs in the second. However, his efforts were not enough to prevent Pakistan from suffering a 90-run defeat.
Medical assessment confirms absence
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that Masood has officially been ruled out of the second Test after undergoing medical examinations. According to the board, scans and a clinical evaluation confirmed the injury, and he is currently receiving treatment under the supervision of the national team’s medical staff.
The board also indicated that Masood’s participation in Pakistan’s upcoming Test series against England remains uncertain. His availability for the first Test, scheduled to begin on August 19 in Leeds, will depend entirely on how well his recovery progresses over the coming weeks. Until then, he will continue to stay with the squad while completing his rehabilitation program.
Pakistan search for batting replacement
Masood’s absence comes at an important stage of the tour, with Pakistan already trailing 1-0 in the two-match series. The team’s batting struggled during the first Test, making the experienced left-hander’s absence even more challenging for the visitors.
The selectors have several options available to strengthen the batting order. Abdullah Shafique and Saud Shakeel were already included in the squad after Abdullah Fazal was ruled out before the series because of a back injury. Both players are now strong contenders for a place in the playing XI.
Another possible replacement is uncapped right-handed batter Awais Zafar, who could earn his first Test cap if the team management decides to introduce fresh talent for the crucial match.
Masood’s Test record
Shan Masood has been an important part of Pakistan’s Test setup over the past few years. Across 47 Test appearances, he has accumulated 2,765 runs at an average of 31.06. His record includes seven centuries and 14 half-centuries, with a highest score of 156.
His experience at the top of the order has often provided stability for Pakistan, making his absence a notable loss as the team looks to bounce back in the series.
Crucial second Test awaits
The second and final Test will be played at Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain from August 2 to August 6. Pakistan must secure a victory to draw the series after losing the opener, while the West Indies will be aiming to complete a clean sweep on home soil.
The defeat in the first Test also affected Pakistan’s position in the World Test Championship standings. They currently occupy ninth place, one position below the West Indies, adding further importance to the upcoming contest.
