K-pop Exports – South Korea Records Historic First-Half Album Export Growth
K-pop Exports –South Korea’s music industry achieved a new milestone during the first six months of the year, with overseas shipments of K-pop albums reaching an all-time high. Official trade figures released on Friday showed that rising global demand, supported by major releases from leading artists, significantly boosted export performance during the January to June period.

Record Export Figures Highlight Growing Global Demand
According to data published by the Korea Customs Service, K-pop album exports were valued at $257.48 million in the first half of the year. This represents a remarkable 125 percent increase compared with the same period last year. The strong growth reflects the continued international popularity of Korean music and the expanding reach of the country’s entertainment industry across multiple regions.
United States Leads Overseas Album Imports
The United States emerged as the largest overseas market for K-pop albums during the six-month period, importing albums worth $74.12 million. China ranked second with imports totaling $61.18 million, while Japan followed closely with purchases valued at $45.61 million.
Other countries that featured among the top destinations for South Korean album exports included Germany, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, and Poland. The broad geographical spread highlights the sustained global appeal of K-pop beyond its traditional Asian markets.
Major Artist Releases Contributed to Export Growth
Industry observers attribute part of the export surge to the return of BTS, one of the world’s most successful music groups. The band released its fifth studio album, “Arirang,” in March, marking its first new album in three years and nine months. Both the album and its lead single reached the top position on Billboard’s main music charts, reinforcing the group’s international influence.
BLACKPINK also contributed to the industry’s strong performance earlier in the year. The group’s third mini album, “Deadline,” was released in February and had recorded nearly two million copies in sales by the end of June, further strengthening South Korea’s music exports.
France Hosts Korean Culture Promotion Event
Alongside the strong performance of music exports, South Korea is expanding efforts to promote its broader cultural industries overseas. This week, the country is organizing the K-Expo France 2026 in Paris, aiming to introduce Korean cultural content alongside products from sectors such as food, beauty, fashion, and tourism.
The event is being held from Tuesday through Friday in the French capital as part of commemorative programs celebrating the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France.
Government Expands Cultural Export Strategy
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, working together with several government agencies, has organized K-Expo events in different countries since 2022. The initiative is designed to support Korean companies seeking international business opportunities by connecting cultural exports with industries including agriculture, fisheries, cosmetics, and consumer products.
At the Palais des Congres in Paris, participating companies and institutions displayed a wide range of Korean products and technologies. Exhibitions included consumer goods as well as innovations in artificial intelligence and immersive digital content, highlighting the country’s growing capabilities across both cultural and technology sectors.
