Landslide – Heavy Rain Triggers Fresh Safety Crisis in Shimla’s Sanjauli Residential Area

For many families living in Bothwell Estate, the early hours of the morning turned into a tense wait after persistent rainfall over nearly 36 hours destabilized a hillside in Shimla’s Sanjauli area. Residents rushed out of their homes around 3 a.m. when parts of the slope began to give way, fearing that nearby buildings could collapse. Officials estimate that around 10 houses have been affected, while at least three face an immediate structural risk.
Residents Demand Immediate Protective Measures
People living in the area said they have been facing uncertainty since a similar landslide occurred last year. Several residents claimed they repeatedly warned authorities about the condition of the hillside and requested preventive action before the latest incident.
Local resident Meera Kainthala recalled that her family had already experienced a dangerous situation during last year’s monsoon when mud and debris entered their home, trapping family members for several hours. According to her, repeated requests for improved safety arrangements around the nearby construction site failed to bring any meaningful response. She also alleged that construction-related work continued despite seasonal restrictions imposed during the monsoon.
Eyewitnesses Describe the Early Morning Incident
Residents who were awake at the time of the incident said warning signs had appeared well before the slope collapsed. Aditya, who was working from home overnight, said visible cracks had developed across the hillside in recent days. Around 3 a.m., he heard a loud noise before a large section of earth gave way.
He claimed that excavation activity in the surrounding area continued even as heavy rainfall intensified over the past two days. According to him, access to several residential buildings has now been disrupted after the connecting road suffered significant damage, forcing people to move through neighboring properties.
Families Remain Outside as Homes Become Unsafe
Another resident, Rahul, who operates a local bakery, said his family has stayed outside since the early morning because they no longer consider their house safe. He believes weakening foundations now pose a serious threat to multiple nearby homes and commercial establishments.
Residents have urged the administration to immediately install temporary protective measures, including covering the exposed hillside with tarpaulins and constructing a retaining structure to prevent further soil movement. They said officials were informed soon after the incident but immediate restoration work had not begun.
Experts Raise Concerns Over Slope Stability
Dr. Paras Prakash, who also lives in the affected neighborhood, warned that the ground beneath several buildings continues to shift. He said emergency services and municipal authorities were contacted shortly after the landslide, but residents remain concerned because the unstable slope could lead to additional damage if urgent stabilization work is delayed.
He further pointed to stretched electrical lines and vulnerable utility poles as additional safety hazards if the land continues to move during ongoing rainfall.
Administration Begins Survey and Inquiry
Sanjauli ward councillor Mamta Chandel confirmed that the Municipal Corporation has initiated a preliminary inspection of the affected area. According to her, officials including engineers and senior civic representatives are surveying the site while emergency protection work, including tarpaulin covering, is being arranged.
She stated that if any construction activity is found to have violated the monsoon restrictions, action will be taken in accordance with the law. She also noted that around six houses remain under direct threat as authorities continue monitoring the situation.
Construction Site Owner Rejects Allegations
Naresh Zinta, the owner of the construction site, denied claims that construction had continued recently. He said no work had been carried out over the past month and argued that blocked drainage channels and rainwater accumulation were the primary reasons behind the landslide.
According to Zinta, he had previously submitted written complaints to municipal officials regarding drainage problems but no permanent solution was implemented. While acknowledging that excavation had been undertaken earlier as part of the project, he maintained that a fair investigation should determine the exact cause of the incident and identify responsibility based on evidence.
Authorities continue to monitor the stability of the hillside as rainfall persists across Shimla. Residents are urging the administration to act swiftly to secure the slope, restore damaged access routes, and protect homes from any further deterioration.
