Weather – Thunderstorms and Moderate Rain Forecast for Tamil Nadu’s Western Ghats

Weather – Tamil Nadu is expected to witness varied weather conditions over the next few days, with moderate rainfall likely over the Western Ghats districts, while most other regions are forecast to remain largely dry, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds across the Western Ghats districts of Tamil Nadu on Saturday. In contrast, Chennai and a few surrounding areas could experience light thundershowers later in the day, while much of the remaining state is likely to see dry weather. The latest forecast has been issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai, which continues to monitor changing atmospheric conditions across the region.

Weather Systems Driving Rainfall Activity

Meteorologists said a trough positioned at an altitude of around 0.9 kilometres continues to persist along the north Tamil Nadu coast. In addition, another trough extending between 1.5 kilometres and 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level stretches from Telangana towards the east-central Arabian Sea near the Karnataka coastline. These atmospheric features are expected to support rainfall activity over parts of Tamil Nadu during the next several days.

Western Ghats Expected to Receive Most Rain

According to the IMD, isolated locations in the Western Ghats districts are likely to receive moderate showers along with thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour on Saturday. Meanwhile, a few places across the rest of Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, may witness light rain accompanied by thunderstorms. However, widespread rainfall is not expected, and dry weather is likely to dominate most districts.

Forecast for the Coming Week

The weather department has indicated that from July 12 to July 14, moderate rainfall is expected to continue at isolated places in the Western Ghats region. During the same period, most parts of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, are expected to experience dry conditions.

For July 15, the forecast suggests light to moderate rainfall at isolated locations in the Western Ghats districts, while the rest of the state is likely to remain largely free from significant rainfall.

Temperature Outlook Across Tamil Nadu

The IMD stated that there is no major change expected in daytime temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Saturday. Similar weather patterns are likely to continue through July 14, although a slight increase in maximum temperatures may occur during this period.

Officials also noted that daytime temperatures on Saturday are expected to stay close to the seasonal average across the region. Between July 12 and July 14, however, some parts of Tamil Nadu could record maximum temperatures around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above normal, while other areas, including Puducherry and Karaikal, are likely to remain near their usual seasonal levels.

Chennai Likely to See Light Thundershowers

For Chennai, the forecast indicates partly cloudy skies throughout Saturday. Some parts of the city may receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms later in the day. The maximum temperature is expected to range between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain between 27 and 28 degrees Celsius.

Residents in the city and nearby areas are advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins, particularly if outdoor activities are planned, as localised thunderstorms could develop during the evening hours.
