Officials said the development marks the first reported instance in Kashmir where suspected Over Ground Workers, commonly known as OGWs, were identified with the assistance of facial recognition technology.
Alerts Generated Near Sarbal Area
According to a police spokesperson, the Facial Recognition System has been deployed in parts of Anantnag as part of the wider security arrangement for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The system reportedly flagged three individuals while they were moving through the Sarbal area, which falls along an important route connected to the annual pilgrimage.
Police teams stationed in the area were informed about the alerts and moved quickly to intercept the individuals. Their identities were subsequently checked through verification procedures, officials said.
Police Identify Suspects During Verification
During the verification process, police concluded that the three individuals were allegedly working as Over Ground Workers for militants. OGWs are generally accused of providing logistical support, information, shelter or other assistance to militant groups operating in the region.
The three men were taken into custody and arrested for further legal action. Police have not released additional information about their identities or the specific allegations being examined as part of the case.
Technology Added to Yatra Security Network
The Facial Recognition System was installed as part of a broader surveillance and security plan designed to support the smooth conduct of the Amarnath Yatra. The pilgrimage attracts a large number of devotees every year, and authorities deploy extensive security arrangements across routes, transit points and base camps.
Officials said the system is intended to help security personnel identify people of concern quickly and allow teams on the ground to respond without delay. The latest detection, police said, demonstrates how surveillance technology can support conventional policing during major public events.
