Monsoon – Bihar Issues Yellow Alert as Heavy Rainfall Threat Grows

Monsoon – The southwest monsoon has strengthened its presence across Bihar, leading the Meteorological Centre in Patna to place 24 districts under a yellow alert. Officials have forecast periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several northern and eastern parts of the state.

Bihar monsoon yellow alert heavy rainfall

Rain and thunderstorms likely in 24 districts

The India Meteorological Department said wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph in some areas during thunderstorms. The alert covers Siwan, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Madhepura, Supaul, Saharsa, Araria, Purnea, Katihar, Kishanganj, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Jamui, West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj.

Residents in these districts have been asked to remain cautious as intense showers may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, while lightning and strong winds could create local safety risks. Weather officials said conditions may change quickly during the day, especially in places where thunderclouds develop.

Green alert remains in southern Bihar

A green alert has been issued for several districts in southern and south-western Bihar. The status indicates that no major weather-related threat is currently expected in these areas, although brief spells of rain and cloudy skies cannot be ruled out.

Patna, Jehanabad, Gaya, Nawada, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Bhojpur, Buxar, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad, Arwal, Lakhisarai and Begusarai are included under the green alert. The weather department said routine activities are expected to continue normally in these districts, with no indication of widespread heavy rainfall at present.

Patna sees drizzle before brighter conditions

Patna received light drizzle during the early morning, but the weather turned brighter later as sunshine returned. The city is expected to see a mix of clouds and occasional light rain over the coming days.

Maximum temperatures in the state capital are likely to remain between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. Intermittent showers and cloud cover may bring modest relief from the recent period of high humidity and uncomfortable heat, though warm conditions are expected to continue through much of the day.

Safety advisory issued for lightning and strong winds

The Meteorological Department has urged people in yellow alert districts to take precautions during thunderstorms. Residents have been advised not to stand under trees or near electric poles when lightning activity is reported.

People have also been asked to stay indoors where possible during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Those travelling on roads should remain alert to poor visibility, slippery surfaces and sudden wind gusts.

Authorities said residents should keep track of official weather updates, particularly in districts covered by the yellow alert, as local conditions may intensify depending on the movement of monsoon clouds.
