Trough Supports Rainfall Across Tamil Nadu

The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said a trough at mean sea level is currently extending from south Gujarat to Kerala. This system is expected to create favourable conditions for rain over several parts of Tamil Nadu.

The forecast comes as the state enters a period of unsettled weather, with western districts and hilly areas likely to see stronger rainfall activity than other regions.

Bay of Bengal System Weakens Into Depression

A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining coastal areas of north Odisha and West Bengal weakened into a depression on Sunday, according to the weather department.

The system is expected to move west-northwest during the next 24 hours. It is likely to cross the north Odisha coast between Chandbali and Tikarpada, close to Balasore, before moving further across north Odisha and towards north Chhattisgarh.

Although the depression is located away from Tamil Nadu, its broader influence, along with the existing trough, is contributing to changing weather conditions across southern parts of the country.

Heavy Rain and Gusty Winds Expected in Hills

The IMD said Coimbatore and the Nilgiris could receive heavy rainfall at one or two places on Monday. Gusty winds may accompany the showers, particularly in exposed and elevated areas.

Other districts near the Western Ghats are also likely to receive moderate rain at isolated locations. Strong winds may affect some parts of these districts during periods of rainfall.

Residents in hill regions and locations close to streams, slopes and low-lying stretches have been advised to remain cautious, especially if rain intensifies suddenly.

Moderate Showers Likely Elsewhere

Several other districts in Tamil Nadu may experience moderate rain at isolated places on Monday. Puducherry is also expected to receive showers, with gusty winds possible in some areas.

The weather department expects similar conditions to continue on Tuesday. Western Ghats districts may receive moderate rainfall at isolated places, while other parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could see light to moderate showers with occasional strong winds.

Rain Activity May Continue Through July 11

The IMD has indicated that rainfall activity is likely to remain active in the coming days. Western Ghats districts may continue to receive moderate rain, while isolated places across the rest of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry could experience light to moderate showers between July 9 and July 11.

No major change in maximum temperatures is expected across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry over the next two days. However, a slight increase in daytime temperatures may be seen in a few locations.

Authorities have urged people in rain-prone areas to stay alert for waterlogging, sudden changes in weather and strong winds. Travellers, motorists and residents in hilly districts have been advised to plan carefully during periods of intense rainfall.
