Monsoon – Veraval Port Raises Weather Alert as Heavy Rain Disrupts Gujarat

Monsoon – Veraval Port in Gujarat raised Local Cautionary Signal Number Three on Saturday as adverse weather conditions were expected along the coast. The warning was issued amid the possibility of heavy rainfall, rough sea conditions and strong winds, with authorities advising fishermen not to enter the sea until further notice.

Port warning issued for squally coastal weather

The India Meteorological Department said the LC-III signal is used to alert ports about potentially dangerous weather linked to low-pressure systems or approaching disturbances. Such conditions may bring squally winds, repeated gusts and heavy rain over coastal areas and nearby waters.

The advisory at Veraval Port comes as the monsoon continues to strengthen across western India. Marine authorities have urged fishing communities and small boat operators to follow official instructions and avoid taking risks during the weather alert.

Heavy rain affects travel and daily activity

Persistent monsoon showers have disrupted normal life in several parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Waterlogging was reported in urban and rural areas, affecting road movement and leaving commuters stranded in some locations.

In Gujarat’s Jamnagar district, the Dhrol area experienced severe flooding after continuous rain. Several important roads were submerged, causing major traffic disruption. Vehicles, including school buses carrying children, were caught in waterlogged stretches, while many residents had to move through waist-deep water to reach safer areas or continue their journeys.

The heavy rainfall also affected local transport services and slowed movement in areas where drainage systems were unable to handle the volume of water.

Rainfall forecast remains active in Saurashtra

The weather department reported heavy rain in Rajkot on July 3. Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy showers were observed in parts of the region on July 4, and similar conditions are expected to continue on July 5.

The IMD has also recorded very heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Valsad and Daman in south Gujarat. In the Saurashtra region, districts including Junagadh, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Jamnagar and Porbandar have also received intense rainfall.

Officials are monitoring the situation in low-lying areas, where additional rainfall could increase the risk of flooding and further water accumulation on roads.

Southwest monsoon advances across northern and western regions

The IMD said the southwest monsoon has advanced into more parts of the north Arabian Sea and Gujarat. It has also covered the remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh and moved into sections of Rajasthan and Haryana.

Earlier this week, the monsoon expanded across additional areas of the country, including parts of Gujarat, the remaining areas of Uttar Pradesh, the whole of Delhi, most of Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, and some areas of Rajasthan.

The progress of the monsoon has brought widespread rain to several states, although the intensity has varied from one district to another.

Water level rises at Gira Waterfalls

Continuous rainfall in the Waghai region has also caused the water level at Gira Waterfalls to rise. Local authorities are expected to keep watch on visitor movement and surrounding areas if rainfall continues at the same pace.

Residents in affected districts have been advised to remain alert, avoid flooded roads where possible and follow weather bulletins issued by local authorities. Fishermen along the Gujarat coast have been asked to wait for further updates before resuming operations at sea.
