Independence Day – Extreme Heat Disrupts Events Across US Cities
Independence Day – America’s 250th Independence anniversary celebrations faced major disruptions on Friday as dangerous heat swept across several eastern US cities, forcing organisers to cancel, delay or modify public events. Temperatures climbed above 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Washington, DC, while high humidity pushed heat index readings beyond 110 degrees in some areas.

Great American State Fair Paused in Washington
The Great American State Fair on the National Mall was temporarily shut down on Friday afternoon after officials raised concerns about heat-related risks. Organisers Freedom 250 said the venue would remain closed until 5 pm local time while weather conditions were assessed.
In a message shared on X, Freedom 250 said the decision was made in coordination with public safety authorities. The group said protecting visitors, volunteers, performers, vendors and staff was its main priority. Organisers expected conditions to improve later in the day and planned to reopen the fair ahead of evening activities.
Philadelphia Parade Cancelled Before Start
The heatwave also affected celebrations in Philadelphia, where a parade planned for Friday was cancelled only hours before it was due to begin. Officials cited the unusually high temperatures as the reason for the decision, with large crowds expected to gather outdoors during the afternoon.
Weather forecasts showed that Philadelphia, New York City and nearby areas were likely to see temperatures close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat index values, which reflect the combined effect of temperature and humidity, were expected to approach 105 degrees in several locations.
Washington Faces One of Its Hottest July Fourths
Washington, DC, was forecast to reach 102 degrees Fahrenheit, or about 38 degrees Celsius, making it potentially one of the hottest July Fourth holidays recorded in the city. The heat emergency came as thousands of people prepared to attend events around the National Mall, Capitol Hill and other public spaces.
Despite the extreme conditions, the annual US Capitol Fourth concert was still scheduled to take place at Capitol Hill. US Capitol Police said gates were expected to open at 7 pm local time, though visitors were advised to prepare for high temperatures and extended periods outdoors.
Trump Attends Mount Rushmore Programme
US President Donald Trump travelled to South Dakota for Independence Eve events and was expected to speak at Mount Rushmore later on Friday. The programme formed part of wider celebrations linked to the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary of independence.
The heatwave has added pressure on local authorities and event organisers, who have been balancing public celebrations with concerns over dehydration, heat exhaustion and other health risks. Several cities issued advisories urging residents and visitors to drink water, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours and seek shaded or air-conditioned spaces when possible.
Climate Debate Continues During Heatwave
The extreme heat has also renewed discussion around climate change and fossil fuel emissions. World Weather Attribution, cited in weather reporting, said the combination of high temperatures and humidity experienced during the week would have been virtually impossible without the impact of fossil fuel pollution.
Trump has continued to reject the scientific consensus on climate change, describing it as a hoax in the past. Reports also said he has called for changes to historical displays and public messaging related to climate change, slavery and other subjects.
With high temperatures expected to continue across parts of the eastern United States, officials are likely to keep monitoring conditions through the Independence Day weekend.
