NH-5 – Kinnaur Highway Reopens After Morning Debris Flow Disrupts Traffic
NH-5 – National Highway-5 in Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district was restored for traffic on Saturday after a debris flow briefly blocked the route during the early morning hours. Officials said the road was reopened soon after clearance work began, allowing vehicles to resume movement.

Debris flow reported after monsoon activity begins
The obstruction occurred around 6.15 am as monsoon conditions became active in parts of Kinnaur. Mud, stones and other debris came down onto the highway, temporarily cutting off traffic on the stretch. District authorities moved machinery to the site shortly after receiving information about the incident.
Kinnaur Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Sharma said the district had begun reporting several weather-related incidents since the arrival of the monsoon. He said excavators and other earth-moving equipment reached the affected location within about half an hour, helping workers clear the road and reopen NH-5 for all categories of vehicles.
Administration steps up monsoon response measures
The Himachal Pradesh government has placed government departments, local authorities and disaster response teams on alert as rainfall activity increases across the state. Officials said preparations have been strengthened to deal with road blockages, power disruptions and other emergencies that may arise during the season.
Naresh Chauhan, Principal Advisor (Media) to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, said the administration had drawn lessons from major weather disasters faced by the state in recent years. He said district administrations, the Public Works Department, electricity services and disaster management teams have been instructed to act quickly whenever rain-related incidents are reported.
According to Chauhan, restoring road connectivity and essential services remains a priority during periods of heavy rain. He said departments are coordinating closely so that affected routes can be cleared at the earliest and public inconvenience can be reduced.
Tourists advised to remain cautious during rainfall
The state government has said that major tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh remain open and safe for visitors, while advising travellers to follow weather warnings and avoid high-risk areas during intense rainfall.
Chauhan said places such as Shimla, Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Kasauli continue to receive tourists. However, visitors have been asked not to go near rivers, streams or other vulnerable locations when heavy rain is underway.
Authorities have also advised travellers to plan journeys carefully, particularly on mountain roads that are known to be affected by landslides and falling debris during the monsoon. People have been urged to check local updates before travelling through remote or landslide-prone stretches.
Orange alert issued for heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh
The Shimla Meteorological Centre had earlier issued an orange alert for July 6 and July 7, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in the low hill, plain and mid-hill areas of Himachal Pradesh. The advisory warned that intense rain could lead to flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
Weather officials said localised debris flows and slope failures may occur in some parts of the state if rainfall remains intense. Motorists may also face slippery roads, poor visibility and temporary traffic disruptions during the forecast period.
Disaster management authorities have asked residents, tourists and farmers to avoid unnecessary travel through vulnerable mountain routes. They have also warned people against visiting swollen rivers, streams, waterfalls and low-lying water bodies during heavy rain.
Swimming and boating in rivers or other water bodies have been strongly discouraged while monsoon conditions remain active. Officials said people should follow weather bulletins issued by the India Meteorological Department and directions from district administrations.
With rainfall expected to increase in the coming days, authorities have urged the public to remain alert and take precautions to reduce risks linked to landslides, flash floods and road blockages.
