Tamil Nadu Rainfall – IMD Warns of Heavy Showers in Three Districts

Tamil Nadu Rainfall –  The India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall forecast for Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Kanyakumari on Saturday after a low-pressure area developed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and nearby regions. The system is expected to strengthen over the next two days, increasing the possibility of broader rain activity across Tamil Nadu.

Tamil nadu heavy rainfall imd warning

Low-pressure area expected to gain strength

According to the IMD’s Saturday weather bulletin, the newly formed low-pressure zone is likely to become more pronounced during the coming 48 hours. Its circulation and moisture flow are expected to affect weather patterns across several districts of Tamil Nadu.

Although the weather system is not currently forecast to make a direct landfall along the Tamil Nadu coast, it is likely to support rainfall over the state. The department said the changing conditions over the Bay of Bengal could lead to more organised rain-bearing clouds in the days ahead.

Heavy rain likely in western and southern districts

Coimbatore, the Nilgiris and Kanyakumari are expected to receive heavy rainfall during the day. Officials have been advised to keep watch in areas that are prone to waterlogging, local flooding and transport disruptions.

The Nilgiris, with its hilly terrain, may require particular attention during spells of intense rain. Residents in low-lying neighbourhoods and vulnerable hillside locations have been urged to follow official weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel when conditions worsen.

Local authorities are expected to assess the situation regularly and take preventive action where needed. Rainfall in isolated pockets could be stronger than in surrounding areas, especially where moisture-laden winds interact with elevated terrain.

Moderate showers forecast for northern Tamil Nadu

The IMD has also predicted moderate rainfall in parts of north Tamil Nadu, along with Puducherry and Karaikal. Other districts across Tamil Nadu are likely to receive light to moderate showers.

The expected rainfall may bring some short-term relief from the warm daytime conditions reported in several areas recently. Cloud cover and rain activity are likely to limit daytime heating through Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures may remain below normal

Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are forecast to stay slightly below normal over the weekend. The IMD linked the expected fall in temperatures to widespread cloud formation and rainfall associated with the Bay of Bengal system.

The cooler weather is expected to be temporary, but it may offer relief to residents who have experienced warmer conditions in recent days. The extent of the temperature change could vary between coastal, inland and hilly districts depending on local rain intensity.

IMD to issue further weather updates

The meteorological department said it will continue tracking the low-pressure area as it develops. Fresh forecasts and warnings may be released if the system strengthens further or causes a change in rainfall distribution.

People living in rain-sensitive locations have been advised to remain alert to official bulletins. Residents should also take basic precautions during heavy showers, including avoiding flooded roads, staying away from unstable slopes and following instructions from local authorities.
