Plastic-Free Delhi – Rekha Gupta Urges Citizens to Choose Reusable Bags
Plastic-Free Delhi – Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has appealed to residents to reduce dependence on single-use plastic bags and adopt environmentally responsible alternatives on International Plastic Bag Free Day, observed worldwide on July 3.

Sustainable habits for everyday life
In a message shared on X, Gupta said the observance should encourage lasting changes rather than remain limited to a single day. She urged people to make reusable bags part of their regular routine while shopping, travelling, or stepping out for daily work.
The Chief Minister advised residents to carry cloth or jute bags and avoid accepting disposable plastic bags. She said small changes in individual behaviour can collectively help create a cleaner, greener and plastic-free Delhi.
Focus on environmental and marine protection
International Plastic Bag Free Day is marked globally to draw attention to the damage caused by single-use plastic bags. These products often remain in the environment for years, affecting land, water bodies and marine ecosystems. The campaign promotes reusable and sustainable options as a practical way to reduce plastic waste.
Green Drive Portal launched under plantation campaign
Earlier on Friday, Gupta launched the Green Drive Portal under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign. The initiative is part of the Delhi government’s plan to plant 70 lakh saplings across the national capital.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister called on Delhi residents to take part in the plantation campaign and support efforts to improve the city’s environmental conditions. She said public participation would be important in building a healthier and greener urban landscape.
Online access for plantation participation
The Green Drive Portal allows residents to book slots for the Mega Plantation Drive, register themselves as Environmental Saviours and reserve free saplings from nearby government nurseries. Citizens can access these services through the official portal at greendrive.delhivanmahotsav.in.
The platform has been designed to make it easier for people to participate in plantation activities in their own neighbourhoods and communities.
Vriksh Rath teams to support residents and institutions
Under the Vriksh Rath initiative, Forest Department teams will assist people interested in planting trees at homes, schools, colleges, residential colonies and other suitable locations. The teams will provide saplings, basic equipment and technical guidance without charge.
The plantation programme will focus on native and long-living species that are suited to Delhi’s climate. These include Peepal, Banyan, Gular, Neem, Arjun and Jamun trees.
Plan for Oxygen Parks across the city
The Delhi government is also planning to develop 100 Oxygen Parks in different parts of the city under its wider green initiative. The proposed parks are expected to support plantation efforts and increase green cover in urban areas.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said the Green Drive Portal has identified plantation locations in all 70 Assembly constituencies. Residents can choose sites based on their constituency or a preferred nearby location.
He said the campaign is not limited to official plantation sites. People are also being encouraged to grow plants and trees at homes, educational campuses, residential complexes and rooftop gardens wherever suitable space is available.
