Admissions – Tirupati Government Schools Witness Strong Class I Enrolment Growth
Admissions – Government schools across Tirupati district have reported a notable increase in student admissions for the 2026-27 academic session, with Class I enrolment reaching 96.6 percent of the planned target. Education officials attribute the improvement to a growing number of families opting for public schools over private institutions, reflecting rising trust in the quality of government education.

Class I admissions approach district target
The District Education Department stated that government schools aimed to enrol 13,562 students in Class I this year. So far, 13,197 children have been admitted, bringing the district close to achieving its enrolment goal. Officials believe Tirupati is likely to rank among the leading districts in Andhra Pradesh for primary school admissions during the current academic year.
Student migration from private schools gains momentum
One of the key trends observed this year has been the movement of students from private schools to government-run institutions. Authorities credit this shift to the extensive “Badi Pilustondi” awareness campaign, which informed parents about improvements in public education, including better infrastructure, modern teaching methods and student welfare initiatives.
District Educational Officer KVN Kumar said every mandal in Tirupati district recorded students transferring from private schools to government schools, indicating a noticeable change in parental preferences. According to the department, Tirupati Urban registered the highest number of such admissions with 190 students. Other mandals reporting significant transfers included Penagaluru, KVB Puram, Chandragiri, Renigunta, Railway Koduru, Buchinaidu Kandriga, Sullurpeta, Naidupeta, Yerpedu, Puttur, Varadaiahpalem, Nagalapuram, Pichatur and Satyavedu.
Awareness campaign reached every mandal
Education officials said the enrolment drive was conducted across all 36 mandals over a period of 36 days. The campaign included door-to-door visits, mobile publicity vehicles, cultural programmes, educational rallies and community outreach activities. Mandal Education Officers, school headmasters, teachers and local public representatives actively participated in encouraging parents to enrol their children in government schools.
KVN Kumar said he personally took part in several public awareness programmes, including human chains organised to promote government school education. These activities aimed to strengthen community involvement and spread awareness about the benefits available in public educational institutions.
Improved facilities attract more families
The department highlighted several facilities that have contributed to increased admissions. Parents were informed about digital classrooms, free textbooks, nutritious midday meals and other educational support provided to students studying in government schools. Officials also pointed to the education reforms introduced under the leadership of Andhra Pradesh HRD Minister Nara Lokesh as an important factor in strengthening public confidence.
Community support strengthens enrolment drive
Officials cited Kothuru village as an example of strong community participation. Residents reportedly installed banners expressing their collective decision to admit their children only to government schools while discouraging private school transport services from entering the village. The department described this initiative as a reflection of the growing confidence families have in the public education system.
As part of the enrolment exercise, education authorities identified 24,658 children who had reached the eligible school-going age of five years and worked to ensure that each child was admitted to school. The increase in admissions has also resulted in the reopening of several schools that had remained closed because of low student strength, providing renewed educational opportunities in local communities
