Indian Defence Contingents Join National Day Parade

The Independence Day parade in Seychelles featured a distinguished marching contingent from the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment alongside personnel from the Indian Navy. As the parade moved through the capital, the Army contingent performed its well-known regimental tune, “Badlu Ram Ka Badan,” drawing attention during the ceremonial proceedings. Their participation symbolised the longstanding friendship and defence cooperation shared by India and Seychelles.

Prime Minister Modi later shared moments from the National Day celebrations through social media and expressed his appreciation to Seychelles President Patrick Herminie for the warm reception extended during the visit.

Naval Presence Reflects Maritime Cooperation

India’s participation also included two important naval assets, the stealth frigate INS Tarkash and the indigenously developed Survey Vessel Large INS Ikshak. Earlier, the Indian Navy had announced that both warships, along with a naval band and marching contingent, would take part in the Golden Jubilee celebrations. The deployment underlined the continued commitment of both nations to enhancing maritime collaboration and regional security in the Indian Ocean.

Bilateral Meetings Focus on Regional Cooperation

On the sidelines of the celebrations, Prime Minister Modi held separate discussions with Seychelles Opposition Leader Bernard Georges and Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam. The meetings focused on strengthening partnerships and expanding cooperation across the strategically important Indian Ocean region.

Following his interaction with Bernard Georges, the Prime Minister said the discussions covered several dimensions of India-Seychelles relations. He also thanked the opposition leader for his supportive remarks in the Seychelles National Assembly after Modi’s address, noting that the bilateral relationship continues to receive support across the country’s political landscape.

India and Mauritius Review Development Partnership

During his meeting with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, Modi recalled their earlier interaction at the AI Summit and welcomed another opportunity for discussions. Both leaders reviewed the progress of the India-Mauritius Enhanced Strategic Partnership and explored ways to deepen cooperation in multiple sectors.

The discussions included ongoing infrastructure and development initiatives being implemented under the Special Economic Package. They also examined opportunities to expand collaboration in capacity building, skill development, maritime security, green energy and cybersecurity, reinforcing the shared commitment to regional growth and stability.

Address to Seychelles National Assembly

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi addressed the National Assembly of Seychelles, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the country’s people. He emphasised that the relationship between India and Seychelles has been built on shared democratic values and long-standing institutional cooperation.

After concluding his address, the Prime Minister interacted with members of the National Assembly, further reinforcing the spirit of friendship between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Seychelles on Saturday for a three-day official visit that includes high-level bilateral engagements and participation in events commemorating the country’s 50th anniversary of independence. The visit reflects India’s continued commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic and security partnerships with key partners across the Indian Ocean region.
