AwamiLeague – Bangladesh Tightens Security Ahead of Awami League Anniversary

AwamiLeague – Bangladesh has stepped up security measures across several regions ahead of the founding anniversary of the banned Awami League, with authorities maintaining strict restrictions on the party despite a change in government. The anniversary falls on June 23, and officials remain concerned about the possibility of unauthorized gatherings linked to the former ruling party.

Army Deployment Planned in Multiple Areas

According to reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs has requested military assistance to support law enforcement agencies in maintaining order during the period surrounding the anniversary. A formal communication was sent to the Armed Forces Division seeking the deployment of troops in selected districts and metropolitan areas where authorities believe additional security arrangements may be necessary.

Officials have cited concerns that prohibited organizations and affiliated groups could attempt to organize rallies, marches, or other activities that may disrupt public order. The government has expressed fears that such events could create instability and potentially lead to damage to property or risks to public safety.

Nine-Day Security Operation

Under the proposed arrangement, military personnel are expected to remain deployed from June 22 through June 30. The operation will be carried out under the framework commonly used to assist civil authorities during periods requiring heightened security.

The areas identified for enhanced monitoring include the metropolitan regions of Dhaka, Chattogram, and Gazipur, along with the districts of Narayanganj, Gopalganj, and Faridpur. Authorities say the objective is to ensure peace, protect citizens, and safeguard public and private property during the sensitive period.

Concerns Over Possible Political Activities

Sources within the Home Ministry have indicated that intelligence assessments suggest supporters of the Awami League could attempt to hold processions, demonstrations, or other public activities despite the ongoing ban. In recent weeks, reports have emerged of brief and scattered processions involving party leaders and activists in different locations.

The government has stated that it remains vigilant and is closely monitoring developments to prevent any activity that may violate existing restrictions.

Background of the Ban

The political landscape in Bangladesh changed significantly following the mass protests that culminated in the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Subsequently, the interim administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus announced a suspension of all activities associated with the party and its affiliated organizations.

In May 2025, the interim government formally introduced legal measures to enforce the prohibition by amending provisions under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The decision was linked to ongoing judicial proceedings involving the party and several of its senior leaders before the International Crimes Tribunal.

Later legislative actions by the National Parliament retained provisions allowing restrictions on organizations accused of involvement in terrorist-related activities, effectively keeping the ban on the Awami League in force.

Dhaka Police Roll Out Extensive Security Measures

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has also introduced a comprehensive security strategy for the capital city. Authorities announced that more than 200 checkpoints will be established at key locations throughout Dhaka to strengthen surveillance and prevent any potential disturbances.

Security screening at major entry points to the city will be intensified, with law enforcement agencies instructed to closely monitor movements that could pose risks to public order. Specialized police units will work alongside regular forces as part of the operation.

Officials said that more than 18,000 police personnel and supporting staff will be deployed across the capital to ensure security and maintain normal civic life during the anniversary period.
