Yoga – The United Nations Headquarters in New York witnessed a vibrant gathering as hundreds of participants joined a special event celebrating the International Day of Yoga, highlighting the growing worldwide acceptance of the ancient Indian discipline.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations hosted the 12th edition of the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the UN Headquarters, attracting nearly 800 participants from different countries and cultural backgrounds. The event showcased yoga’s expanding global influence and its role in promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Growing International Recognition of Yoga
Sharing details about the programme, the Indian Mission to the UN stated that the celebration brought together yoga practitioners and enthusiasts to commemorate the annual global observance. During the event, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish P, spoke about yoga’s increasing popularity around the world and its contribution to fostering healthier lifestyles.
A special message from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was also delivered during the gathering, underlining the significance of yoga as a practice that encourages balance, wellness, and harmony in everyday life.
Demonstrations Highlight Ancient Practice
The event featured guided sessions based on the Common Yoga Protocol, allowing participants to engage in a structured practice suitable for all skill levels. Attendees also witnessed an advanced yoga demonstration presented by the Art of Living Foundation.
Adding further significance to the programme, Yogmata Keiko Aikawa, widely recognised as the first female and non-Indian Siddha Master, attended the celebration and interacted with participants. Her presence reflected yoga’s ability to transcend national and cultural boundaries.

According to organisers, close to 800 individuals actively took part in the event, illustrating how yoga continues to attract followers across diverse communities worldwide. The strong turnout highlighted the practice’s growing relevance in addressing modern health and wellness challenges.

The UN gathering is one of several yoga-related events being organised across the United States ahead of the International Day of Yoga on June 21. Major public sessions are scheduled at prominent landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, Times Square in New York City, and Navy Pier in Chicago.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” focuses on the benefits of yoga in supporting mobility, mental health, and long-term well-being. Organisers aim to encourage people of all age groups to incorporate yoga into their daily routines for a healthier lifestyle.
Preparations Underway for June 21 Celebrations
As part of the lead-up activities, the Indian Embassy in Washington recently conducted a yoga session at the historic DuPont Circle. The programme was organised to build awareness and encourage public participation in the main event scheduled at the Lincoln Memorial.
Meanwhile, a major yoga gathering is set to take place in Times Square on June 21 under the guidance of HR Nagendra, the yoga mentor associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event is being coordinated by the Consulate General of India in New York and is expected to draw a large number of participants.
