Population Estimates Remain Preliminary

Authorities involved in the census exercise stated that the current population numbers are based solely on the first phase of data collection. The final and official population count will be established during the Population Enumeration phase, which is scheduled to take place in February 2027. Only after this stage is completed will a definitive population figure for Delhi be released.

The southwest district followed with approximately 25 lakh people. The west district registered a population of 24,42,346, while the southeast district accounted for 22,70,778 residents.

New Delhi district once again recorded the lowest numbers, with close to one lakh census houses identified during the survey.

Special Survey Conducted in New Delhi District

Officials noted that house listing work in the New Delhi district was carried out between April 16 and May 15. During this period, around 63,000 households were covered and nearly 2.5 lakh individuals were recorded.

The first phase of the census focused primarily on creating a detailed inventory of buildings and residential structures. Enumerators also collected information related to household facilities, amenities, and assets available to residents.

Next Phase Scheduled for February 2027

The upcoming Population Enumeration phase will gather detailed demographic, social, and economic information from residents. This stage will play a crucial role in determining the final population count for both Delhi and the country.

The ongoing 16th Census of India is being conducted in two stages. The House Listing and Housing Census began on April 1, 2026, and will continue until September. It will be followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027, after which the official population statistics will be released.
