OppositionPolitics – Fadnavis Says Congress-Centric Opposition Unity Would Benefit BJP
OppositionPolitics – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday dismissed ongoing speculation about regional opposition parties potentially merging with the Congress, arguing that any such political consolidation would ultimately work in favor of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaking during a press conference organized to mark 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, Fadnavis criticized opposition leaders and questioned the practicality of the merger discussions currently dominating political conversations in the state.

Fadnavis Questions Merger Discussions
Addressing media queries, Fadnavis remarked that leaders from parties not directly involved in the matter were driving the debate. Taking an indirect dig at Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, he suggested that unnecessary attention was being given to a proposal that had not been formally advanced by the concerned political parties themselves.
The Chief Minister also expressed doubt that experienced regional leaders would willingly merge with a party facing electoral challenges in several parts of the country. According to him, political leaders are aware of ground realities and would carefully evaluate any move that could affect their independent political identity and future prospects.
BJP Sees Opportunity in Opposition Consolidation
Fadnavis further stated that even if opposition parties eventually decide to unite under the Congress banner, the BJP would not view it as a setback. Instead, he argued that such a development could create additional political space for the ruling party.
He noted that when regional parties reduce their independent presence or dissolve their separate identities, it can open opportunities for rival parties to expand their reach among voters. The BJP, he said, would continue to observe developments before drawing any conclusions.
Political Buzz Surrounds Opposition Unity
The discussion gained momentum after repeated calls from opposition leaders advocating greater unity among parties opposed to the BJP. In recent weeks, several political figures have suggested that a stronger and more coordinated opposition could present a more effective challenge in future elections.
The debate intensified around the time the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) marked its 27th foundation anniversary, leading to widespread speculation about possible organizational changes and alliances among opposition groups.
Congress Leader’s Remarks Trigger Reactions
Congress MLA and senior leader Nana Patole added fuel to the discussion by claiming that a merger proposal involving the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) had previously been considered. Patole stated that discussions on such a move had taken place in the past but did not progress due to various circumstances.
He also suggested that broader efforts were underway across the country to bring together parties with similar ideological positions. According to Patole, some regional political organizations were evaluating options that could strengthen the opposition landscape at the national level.
NCP (SP) Rejects Merger Speculation
However, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) strongly denied reports of any ongoing merger process. State party president Shashikant Shinde clarified that no formal proposal had been received from the Congress and that the matter had not been discussed within the party leadership.
Shinde emphasized that a recent meeting held at Sharad Pawar’s Mumbai residence focused on organizational matters and did not include any agenda related to a merger with another political party.
Raut Advocates Stronger Opposition Front
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut continued to advocate greater opposition unity. He argued that a stronger Congress could provide a credible national alternative and urged veteran leader Sharad Pawar to play a leading role in bringing like-minded parties together.
Responding to Raut’s comments, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule adopted a measured approach. She said that every political leader has the right to express personal views in a democracy and acknowledged that Raut’s suggestions would be considered with due respect.
BJP Leaders Continue Criticism
Several BJP leaders also reacted to the ongoing speculation. Senior BJP leader Chandrakant Patil described Congress as a declining political force and expressed confidence that voters would continue supporting the BJP at various levels of governance.
State minister Girish Mahajan also commented on the discussion, saying that a healthy opposition is important for democracy. At the same time, he questioned the current strength of opposition parties in Maharashtra and reacted sarcastically to reports of a possible merger.
