Controversy – NCW Summons Comedian and Audience Member Over Viral Show Clip
Controversy –A growing controversy surrounding remarks made during a stand-up comedy performance in Gurugram has led to official intervention, with the National Commission for Women (NCW) taking notice of a viral video that sparked widespread public criticism.

NCW Takes Suo Motu Action
On Thursday, the NCW issued summons to stand-up comedian Pranit More and Himanshu Jangra, a web developer who participated in an interaction during the show. The commission acted after a clip from the event circulated extensively across social media platforms and attracted strong reactions from viewers.
The viral segment featured a conversation in which Jangra spoke about a past dating experience. During the exchange, he suggested that spending approximately Rs 370 on a chicken biryani during a date created an expectation of receiving something in return from the woman. The remarks, delivered in a humorous setting, were met with laughter from both the audience member and the comedian.
Viral Video Draws Public Backlash
As the video gained traction online, criticism intensified, with many users raising concerns about the message conveyed through the interaction. The clip quickly became a subject of debate, with discussions focusing on issues related to consent, respect, and gender sensitivity.
Reports indicate that the backlash had professional consequences for Jangra, who was allegedly dismissed by his employer following the controversy. Meanwhile, More has reportedly deactivated his Instagram account amid increasing scrutiny and criticism on social media.
Commission Raises Concerns Over Consent
In its statement, the National Commission for Women said it had taken suo motu cognisance of media reports and the widely shared video. According to the commission, the content appeared to promote attitudes that could be interpreted as supporting sexual coercion and behaviour lacking consent.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Haryana Director General of Police, seeking prompt and time-bound action in the matter. The commission has also requested that authorities submit a detailed action taken report within seven days.
Impact on Social Attitudes Highlighted
The commission expressed concern over the broader implications of such public statements, emphasizing that narratives which undermine a woman’s consent, dignity, and bodily autonomy can negatively influence social attitudes.
According to the NCW, the normalisation of such behaviour may contribute to harmful perceptions regarding gender relations and could affect ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring women’s safety and equality. The commission stressed the importance of promoting responsible public discourse, particularly when content reaches large audiences through digital platforms.
Maharashtra Cyber Police Register Case
In a parallel development, the Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered a case against More, Jangra, and several others in Mumbai. Officials stated that the action followed a preliminary examination of the viral video clips associated with the comedy show.
The case has been lodged at the Nodal Cyber Police Station, where investigators are examining allegations related to the online dissemination of content described as obscene and objectionable. Authorities have also summoned those involved for questioning as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The matter continues to attract public attention as investigations proceed and authorities assess the legal and social implications arising from the viral exchange.
