Successful Medical Procedure and Recovery

According to hospital officials, the surgery was performed on June 8 and proceeded without complications. Medical specialists closely monitored the Dalai Lama throughout his stay, working alongside his personal healthcare team to ensure a smooth treatment process. Hospital authorities stated that coordination between the Dalai Lama’s office and medical staff remained continuous during his hospitalization.

A senior consultant involved in the treatment said the spiritual leader responded well to the procedure and showed encouraging signs of recovery. Following post-operative assessments, doctors approved his discharge on Friday morning.

Previous Surgery in the United States

This is the second major knee operation the Dalai Lama has undergone in recent years. In June 2024, he received a right knee replacement at a specialized medical facility in New York City. Medical reports at the time indicated that he made a strong recovery and was able to resume his regular engagements after rehabilitation.

The latest surgery was undertaken to improve mobility and address age-related joint issues. Healthcare professionals remain optimistic about his recovery and expect him to gradually return to his public schedule.

Planned Visit to Ladakh

Following his recuperation, the Dalai Lama is expected to travel to the Himalayan region of Ladakh later this month. His office has already announced plans for an extended stay in the region, where he regularly meets followers and participates in religious and cultural events.

Ladakh has long been one of the spiritual leader’s preferred destinations. His visits often attract large gatherings of people from different religious backgrounds who attend teachings, blessings, and public interactions. The region shares historical and cultural ties with Tibetan Buddhism and remains an important center for Buddhist traditions.

Birthday Programme Expected in Leh

The Dalai Lama is also expected to take part in a public event marking his 91st birthday on July 6. The celebration is likely to be held in Leh, the largest town in Ladakh, where residents and visitors traditionally gather to honour his contributions to peace, compassion, and interfaith dialogue.

His public appearances in border regions near Tibet have frequently drawn attention beyond India due to the spiritual and cultural significance he holds for Tibetan communities worldwide.

A Life in Exile

The Dalai Lama has lived in exile since 1959, when a Tibetan uprising in Lhasa was suppressed by Chinese forces. Following the unrest, he fled Tibet and made a difficult journey into India along with thousands of Tibetans seeking refuge.

After arriving in India, he initially stayed in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, before eventually establishing his residence in Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. Over the decades, Dharamsala has become the center of the Tibetan community in exile and the headquarters of the Tibetan administration.

Today, the town remains home to thousands of Tibetans who continue to preserve their cultural heritage while advocating for greater autonomy for Tibet. The Dalai Lama continues to serve as a respected global spiritual figure, promoting non-violence, compassion, and dialogue across nations and faiths.
