According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the Palau-registered tanker MT Settebello was involved in an incident that resulted in a fire after it was reportedly struck by a projectile while navigating waters near Oman. The organization expressed serious concern over the event and emphasized the need to safeguard civilian shipping and maritime personnel.
IMO Calls for Accountability
In a statement released on Wednesday, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez described the situation as deeply troubling. He stressed that any action placing seafarers at risk or threatening the safety of international maritime transport is unacceptable.
Dominguez reiterated that protecting commercial vessels, ensuring the safety of crews, and preserving freedom of navigation remain fundamental principles under international maritime law. He also emphasized that all activities affecting shipping routes must prioritize human safety and comply with established legal frameworks.
The IMO further urged authorities to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
US Military Provides Its Version of Events
Separately, the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) issued its own account of what occurred in the Gulf of Oman. According to the American military, US forces intervened late Tuesday after repeated instructions to the vessel’s crew allegedly went unanswered.
CENTCOM stated that a US military aircraft carried out a precision strike targeting the tanker’s engine room. The military said the action was taken after multiple attempts to secure compliance from the vessel reportedly failed.
The differing accounts surrounding the incident are expected to draw further scrutiny as investigations continue.
Growing Security Challenges in Regional Waters
The latest event adds to a series of security-related incidents affecting maritime traffic in and around the Strait of Hormuz. The IMO noted that since February 28, 2026, at least 43 confirmed attacks on international shipping have been recorded in the region.
The waterway serves as a critical route for global trade and energy supplies, making any disruption a matter of international concern. Shipping companies, governments, and maritime organizations have increasingly voiced worries about escalating tensions and the risks faced by commercial vessels operating in nearby waters.
India Responds to Missing Crew Members
India strongly condemned the attack and expressed concern for its citizens serving aboard the tanker. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 24 Indian nationals were part of the vessel’s crew.
According to the ministry, 21 Indian crew members have been rescued, while three remain missing. Indian authorities said the country’s embassy in Oman is actively coordinating with local officials and monitoring ongoing search-and-rescue operations.
The MEA stated that repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the region are alarming and linked to the broader instability affecting the area.
Call for De-escalation and Safe Navigation
India also renewed its appeal for reducing regional tensions and pursuing diplomatic efforts to restore stability. The government stressed the importance of protecting civilian infrastructure and commercial shipping from further attacks.
