Governance – Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a significant milestone in Indian politics, completing 4,399 days in office and becoming the country’s longest-serving Prime Minister to hold power through consecutive elected terms, according to information released by the Prime Minister’s Office. The achievement has sparked fresh political debate, with leaders from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress offering contrasting views on the significance of the record.
BJP Leaders Welcome the Milestone
Reacting to the development on Thursday, West Bengal minister Dilip Ghosh praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and said the achievement reflected the confidence that voters continue to place in him. He stated that while the Congress party appeared unhappy with the milestone, many citizens across the country viewed Modi’s tenure positively because of the changes they believe have taken place during his years in office.
Ghosh credited the Prime Minister for implementing major initiatives and steering the country through significant developments over the past decade. He also expressed hope that Modi would remain healthy and continue contributing to national progress. Kharge argued that India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, remains the longest-serving Prime Minister in the country’s history. He further noted that Nehru also held the record for the longest uninterrupted tenure in office. According to the Congress leader, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi ranks second in terms of overall time served as head of government.
The Congress chief claimed that the BJP had introduced a new category focused specifically on consecutive elected terms in order to present Modi’s tenure as a unique record. He described the approach as an attempt to reshape historical comparisons for political advantage.

Beyond the debate over historical records, Kharge also used the occasion to criticize the Modi government’s performance on several policy fronts.
