Crime Investigation – A major breakthrough in a Navi Mumbai murder investigation has led to the arrest of a 32-year-old man accused of killing a woman and allegedly burning her body to conceal the crime. Police officials said the suspect was taken into custody after an extensive inquiry involving technical surveillance, mobile phone analysis, and verification of missing persons records.
Charred Body Discovered in Panvel Area
The case dates back to April 11, when police recovered the burnt and partially decomposed body of an unidentified woman near the border of Chinchvali and Wakdi villages in Panvel taluka. Due to the severe condition of the remains, investigators initially faced significant challenges in identifying the victim.
According to officials, no documents or personal belongings capable of establishing the woman’s identity were found at the scene. Investigators then began examining every available clue, including jewellery recovered from the body. Details of the ornaments were circulated through law enforcement networks, while CCTV footage from surrounding areas and technical intelligence inputs were also reviewed to gather leads.
Missing Person Report Helps Identify Victim
A turning point in the investigation came when a police constable connected the case with a missing person complaint filed at the Shil Daighar police station in Thane district. The jewellery found with the deceased closely matched the description provided by the victim’s family.
Further verification confirmed that the deceased was 30-year-old Anitadevi Bhagwan Rajbhar. As investigators examined her background and recent activities, they discovered that she had been in regular contact with Karan Namdev Patil, a resident of Phadkepada in Shilphata who worked as a brick supplier. This finding prompted police to focus their attention on him.
Phone Records Strengthen Suspicion
Investigators examined call data records and reportedly found frequent communication between Rajbhar and Patil before her disappearance. Police officials stated that Patil initially failed to respond to notices issued during the inquiry, increasing suspicion regarding his possible involvement.
Following his detention, officers questioned him extensively as part of the ongoing investigation. Police claim that evidence gathered during the probe indicated a close acquaintance between the two individuals. Investigators allege that disagreements related to marriage eventually became central to the case.
Alleged Motive Linked to Marriage Pressure
According to police, Rajbhar had repeatedly asked Patil to marry her. Investigators believe the accused decided to eliminate her in an attempt to avoid continued pressure regarding the relationship.
Police allege that on April 6, Patil persuaded Rajbhar to accompany him in his vehicle before taking her to a secluded location. Investigators claim he then attacked her with an iron rod, causing fatal injuries. After the alleged murder, authorities say he transported the body to the Chinchvali area of Panvel.
Officials further stated that the accused allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by pouring petrol on the body and setting it on fire. Investigators believe the fuel used in the incident was taken from his own vehicle.
Court Grants Police Custody
Patil was arrested on June 8 and later produced before a court. The court remanded him to police custody until June 12, allowing investigators additional time to gather evidence and verify details connected to the case.
Police have registered charges related to murder and destruction of evidence. Officials said the investigation remains active, with forensic findings, technical evidence, and witness statements being examined to establish the complete sequence of events. Authorities are also working to corroborate the accused’s alleged confession before further legal proceedings are initiated.
