Artificial Intelligence – Pawar Highlights AI’s Potential After NEET Controversy

Artificial Intelligence – Concerns surrounding examination integrity have once again brought technology into focus, with Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar faction) president Sharad Pawar stating that wider adoption of artificial intelligence could have helped prevent the issues that emerged during the NEET examination process.

Pawar made the remarks on Saturday while addressing questions related to the controversy surrounding the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). According to him, advanced technological systems, particularly artificial intelligence-based monitoring and security mechanisms, could have reduced the likelihood of such irregularities occurring.

AI Could Strengthen Examination Security

Responding to queries about whether AI-driven systems might have helped avoid the alleged paper leak, Pawar said that earlier implementation of such technologies could have prevented the situation from developing. He emphasized the importance of modern digital tools in safeguarding large-scale examinations and improving transparency in assessment procedures.

His comments came during the launch of the “Technology on Wheels” initiative, a project introduced by the Sharadchandra Pawar Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence under Vidya Pratishthan. The program is being conducted in partnership with the Sakal Media Group and aims to bring technological learning opportunities to students living in rural and remote regions.

Confidence in Ongoing Investigation

Without mentioning any individual by name, Pawar also referred to an official currently overseeing responsibilities related to the matter at the national level. He described the officer as highly capable, experienced, and known for maintaining integrity in public service.

Pawar noted that he had worked with the officer in the past and expressed confidence that the impact of the officer’s efforts would become visible within the next couple of months. His remarks suggested optimism regarding the progress of the ongoing investigation and corrective measures being undertaken by authorities.

NEET Examination Faces Scrutiny

The controversy emerged after NEET (UG) 2026, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on May 3, came under scrutiny following allegations of a paper leak. As concerns intensified, authorities cancelled the examination on May 12.

The investigation was subsequently handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to available information, 13 individuals have been arrested so far in connection with the case as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged leak.

A fresh examination has been scheduled for June 21, providing affected candidates another opportunity to appear for the entrance test.

Administrative Changes at NTA

Following the controversy, the central government introduced administrative changes within the National Testing Agency. Two senior officers were appointed to key positions as part of efforts to strengthen the functioning of the examination body.

Anuja Bapat, a 1998-batch officer from the Indian Statistical Service, and Ruchita Vij, a 2004-batch officer from the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes), have been appointed as joint secretaries in the agency for a five-year tenure.

Meanwhile, opposition parties have continued to demand accountability over the incident and have called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

AI’s Growing Role Beyond Education

Beyond examination management, Pawar underlined the broader significance of artificial intelligence across multiple sectors. He pointed to the growing use of AI in agriculture, healthcare, and other fields where technology is helping improve efficiency and decision-making.

The former Union Agriculture Minister said that artificial intelligence has already contributed significantly to advancements in farming practices and productivity. He stressed that efforts should continue to expand the use of emerging technologies in various sectors to support development and innovation across the country.
