HotelBusiness –   The economic fallout from the recent fire tragedy in Malviya Nagar is now being felt beyond the hospitality sector, as many small businesses in the surrounding Hauz Rani area report a sharp decline in customers. Following the June 3 incident that resulted in the loss of 21 lives, authorities took action by sealing or vacating several guest accommodations, significantly affecting commercial activity in the neighborhood.

Small Businesses Witness Sudden Decline

Local shopkeepers and service providers say the reduction in hotel occupancy has directly impacted their daily earnings. Restaurants, laundries, grocery outlets, and travel-related businesses that depend heavily on visitors and patient attendants are experiencing a noticeable slowdown.

Abdul Wasim, who operates a roadside eatery in the area, explained that a large portion of his customers usually come from nearby guest houses. According to him, business had already been disrupted during the Eid holiday period, and the recent developments have worsened the situation. He noted that uncertainty over when normal operations will resume has created concerns among workers, some of whom have already returned to their hometowns due to reduced employment opportunities.

Laundry Services Face Major Revenue Losses

The impact has been especially severe for businesses connected to hotel operations. Rakesh Kumar, who runs a laundry service nearby, said that most of his work comes from washing hotel linens, towels, and guest clothing.

With several accommodations currently closed, the volume of orders has dropped dramatically. Kumar stated that if conditions remain unchanged for the coming weeks, the business could face financial losses running into nearly one lakh rupees. He added that the lack of daily hotel-related work has placed considerable pressure on operations.

Retail Stores Report Reduced Customer Movement

Convenience stores in the locality are also experiencing weaker sales. Mohammad Arif, a shop owner in Hauz Rani, said the area normally remains active throughout the day, with visitors purchasing essentials such as bottled water, medicines, snacks, and other daily-use products.

However, since the accommodation facilities were vacated, customer traffic has declined significantly. Arif estimated that his store’s sales have dropped by more than fifty percent compared with normal business levels.

Food Vendors Struggle With Falling Demand

The slowdown has also affected food vendors who cater to visitors staying near medical facilities. Sanjay Gupta, who manages a food outlet close to the cluster of guest accommodations, said many of his regular customers are family members accompanying patients receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

He explained that these visitors often stay in the area for extended periods and rely on local food establishments for daily meals. With fewer guests remaining in the neighborhood, demand has fallen sharply. Gupta expressed concern that unsold food supplies may result in substantial monthly losses if business conditions do not improve soon.

Area Known for Medical Visitors Faces Uncertainty

Over the years, Hauz Rani has developed into an important lodging hub for patients and attendants visiting healthcare institutions, particularly because of its proximity to major medical centers. Budget hotels and guest houses in the area have traditionally served people arriving from various states across India as well as international visitors seeking medical treatment.

The recent closures have temporarily disrupted this ecosystem, affecting not only accommodation providers but also the numerous small enterprises that depend on a steady flow of visitors. Business owners are now hoping for a gradual restoration of normal activity so that livelihoods across the neighborhood can recover from the ongoing downturn.
