FireSafety – Delhi High Court Pushes for Faster Action on Hospitality Safety Measures
FireSafety – The Delhi High Court has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for stronger fire safety arrangements in hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality establishments across the national capital. Despite clear directions issued earlier this year, authorities responsible for implementing safety measures have yet to take visible action, according to legal representatives connected to the matter.
Court Stressed Immediate Need for Safety Improvements
The issue came before a division bench led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia while hearing a public interest litigation focused on fire safety concerns. The petition sought a detailed and coordinated strategy to improve safety standards in commercial hospitality venues and reduce the risk of future tragedies.
During the proceedings, the court emphasized the importance of developing a practical framework that would help prevent fire-related accidents. The judges instructed the concerned agencies to act promptly and consider the petition as a formal representation requiring immediate attention.
Authorities Directed to Prepare Comprehensive Plan
In its order issued on January 7, the High Court asked the Delhi government, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to take an appropriate decision without unnecessary delay. The court also highlighted the need for a structured action plan aimed at strengthening fire prevention mechanisms across hospitality establishments operating in the city.
The petition was subsequently disposed of after the court issued these directions, expecting the authorities to move quickly on the recommendations.
Concerns Raised Over Lack of Compliance
However, months after the court’s order, the petitioner has alleged that little progress has been made. Advocate Arpit Bhargava, who filed the public interest litigation, stated that several reminders were sent to senior officials, including the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government, the Commissioner of the MCD, and the Chairperson of the NDMC.
According to the advocate, repeated communications requesting implementation of the court’s directions did not receive a meaningful response. He argued that the lack of follow-up reflects a serious failure to address a matter directly linked to public safety.
Petition Linked to Deadly Fire Incident
The legal action was initiated in the aftermath of a devastating nightclub fire in Goa on December 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of 25 people. The tragedy renewed concerns about fire preparedness and emergency response systems in public venues where large numbers of people gather.
The petitioner argued that similar risks could exist in many establishments unless authorities conduct proper inspections, enforce regulations, and ensure compliance with safety norms. The case sought preventive measures rather than waiting for another major incident to occur.
Fresh Reminder Sent Amid Recent Fire Accidents
Bhargava further stated that his most recent communication was sent on May 5, urging officials to implement the court’s directions at the earliest. He noted that several fire incidents reported in recent months underscored the importance of taking preventive action without delay.
The matter continues to highlight ongoing concerns regarding fire safety enforcement in Delhi’s hospitality sector. With the court having already called for swift action, attention now remains focused on whether the concerned authorities will move forward with a comprehensive plan designed to improve public safety and reduce the likelihood of future fire-related disasters.
