Politics – A fresh political debate has emerged in Madhya Pradesh after BJP legislator Rameshwar Sharma raised concerns about changing population patterns in certain regions and linked the issue to the proposed implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). His remarks, made in Bhopal on Wednesday, have drawn attention amid the state government’s ongoing efforts to gather public feedback on the proposed legislation.
BJP MLA Raises Concerns Over Population Trends
Speaking to reporters, Sharma stated that demographic changes in some areas were becoming noticeable and argued that the growth of particular communities was creating social unease in certain sections of society. The BJP leader said that these developments had strengthened the argument for introducing uniform legal provisions governing family-related matters.
According to Sharma, discussions surrounding population management have also gained visibility across the country. He claimed that many people support stricter policies aimed at regulating family size and suggested that stronger measures should be considered to address concerns linked to population growth.
Call for Support on Uniform Civil Code
The BJP MLA urged opposition parties, particularly the Congress, to back the government’s efforts regarding the Uniform Civil Code. He maintained that political differences should not become an obstacle to what he described as an important legal reform initiative.
Sharma also referred to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, noting that family planning had been promoted during her tenure. He argued that the Congress should acknowledge those earlier efforts and support measures that seek to address related issues today.
Representing the Huzur constituency in Bhopal for a third consecutive term, Sharma appealed to Congress leaders in Madhya Pradesh to cooperate with the state government in advancing the UCC proposal rather than opposing it through political campaigns.
Chief Minister Announces Progress on UCC Initiative
The comments come shortly after Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reiterated his government’s commitment to introducing a Uniform Civil Code in Madhya Pradesh. Earlier this week, Yadav announced that the state had begun the process of collecting opinions from citizens and experts before taking further steps toward drafting the legislation.
The Chief Minister said that separate personal laws governing marriage and family matters based on religious affiliation may no longer be necessary in the present context. He emphasized the need for a common legal framework that would apply uniformly across communities.
Public Consultations and Expert Opinions Underway
State authorities have initiated consultations with legal professionals, policy experts, and members of the public as part of the preliminary process leading to the preparation of a UCC bill. Officials are seeking feedback from various stakeholders before finalizing the framework of the proposed law.

Opposition Yet to Respond
