ExaminationReforms – A key parliamentary committee meeting on Monday witnessed disagreement over the participation of a doctors’ association that had approached the Supreme Court regarding the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. Sources indicated that members of the ruling party objected to the group’s presentation before the panel, resulting in its representatives being unable to share their views during the session.

Doctors’ Association Barred From Making Presentation

According to sources familiar with the proceedings, representatives of the United Doctors Forum (UDF) had been invited to appear before the Parliamentary Standing Committee. The organization is among the petitioners that have raised concerns before the Supreme Court over alleged irregularities and shortcomings in the conduct of the NEET-UG examination.

The association has argued that weaknesses in the examination process contributed to the controversy surrounding the paper leak. It has also proposed major structural reforms, including replacing the National Testing Agency (NTA) in its current form with a statutory institution established through legislation. However, objections raised by BJP lawmakers reportedly prevented the UDF from addressing the committee.

Focus on Examination Formats

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports convened the meeting to evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with traditional pen-and-paper examinations and computer-based testing for large-scale national assessments.

During the discussion, senior NTA officials, including Director General Abhishek Singh, briefed committee members on the agency’s plans for future examinations. Officials informed the panel that NEET is expected to move to a computer-based testing format beginning in 2027. Until then, the agency remains focused on conducting upcoming examinations using the existing offline model.

Assurance on Upcoming Examination

The committee also discussed preparations for the forthcoming NEET-UG examination scheduled for June 21. Members sought detailed information about the safeguards introduced to prevent any recurrence of paper leak incidents.

Officials assured lawmakers that extensive security arrangements have been put in place. The NTA reportedly informed the panel that multiple layers of monitoring and protection would be used to strengthen examination integrity and maintain public confidence in the process.

Digvijaya Singh Responds to Reports

Congress leader and committee chairman Digvijaya Singh also addressed reports suggesting that he had expressed confidence in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s handling of the examination issue.

Clarifying his position, Singh said that since the Prime Minister has reportedly taken direct responsibility for ensuring the smooth conduct of the upcoming examination, expectations are high that the process will proceed without disruption. He added that any future lapses would raise serious questions about accountability at the highest level.

Singh stated that if the examination is conducted successfully and without controversy, it would help restore trust among students and parents. However, he noted that any further irregularities would invite stronger scrutiny.

Cybersecurity Concerns Discussed

Apart from paper leaks, committee members also examined potential cybersecurity risks linked to computer-based examinations. Questions were raised about the possibility of hacking attempts and technical vulnerabilities in digital testing systems.

Responding to these concerns, NTA officials informed the panel that a dedicated committee has been established to assess cybersecurity challenges and recommend protective measures. The committee is expected to submit its findings within the next three months.

Senior Officials Participate in Deliberations

The parliamentary panel also invited Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi and Health and Family Welfare Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava to contribute to discussions on examination reforms.

Lawmakers reviewed various aspects of both testing formats, including accessibility, security, technological readiness, and operational efficiency. The broader objective remains identifying the most reliable and transparent system for conducting national-level entrance examinations.

Further Review Scheduled

The committee is scheduled to meet again on Tuesday. During the next session, members will examine the implementation of the on-screen marking system in CBSE examinations and discuss concerns raised by students regarding technical issues experienced during assessment processes.

The ongoing discussions are expected to play an important role in shaping future examination reforms and strengthening confidence in India’s education assessment framework.
