Security – Jammu and Kashmir Records First Fatality-Free May in Decades Amid Improved Security
Security – Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a significant security milestone in May as the Union Territory recorded no deaths linked to terrorism or infiltration-related incidents during the month. Data compiled by the South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) indicates that the region experienced its first fatality-free May in more than three decades, highlighting a notable improvement in the overall security environment.

Historic Decline in Terror-Related Fatalities
According to SATP figures, no civilian, security personnel, or militant deaths were reported in May 2026 due to terrorism-related violence. Security analysts describe the development as an important indicator of changing ground realities in the region, especially during a period that has historically seen increased militant activity.
The data shows that Jammu and Kashmir recorded a total of 12 terrorism-related deaths during the first four months of the year. These included three fatalities in January, six in February, two in March, and one in April. Most of those killed were militants, while one member of the security forces also lost his life.
Comparison With Previous Years
Historical records reveal a dramatic decline in violence compared with previous years. In May 2025, terrorism-related incidents claimed 14 lives, while seven deaths were recorded in May 2024. Earlier years witnessed considerably higher casualty figures, including 38 deaths in May 2022 and 28 in May 2020.
The contrast becomes even more striking when compared with the early 2000s. During that period, May frequently recorded hundreds of fatalities linked to terrorism and infiltration attempts. The latest figures therefore represent one of the most significant reductions in violence witnessed in the region over recent decades.
Security Measures Credited for Improvement
Security officials attribute the improved situation to sustained counterterrorism operations and enhanced border surveillance systems. Authorities say that anti-infiltration mechanisms deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border have become increasingly effective in preventing unauthorized crossings.
Experts note that the arrival of summer traditionally created opportunities for infiltration as mountain routes reopened after winter snowfall. However, strengthened monitoring and intelligence-based operations have reportedly reduced such threats considerably.
Officials also pointed to a sharp decline in local militant recruitment. According to security assessments, recruitment levels have fallen to their lowest point in recent years, limiting the ability of militant organizations to rebuild their networks within the region.
Militant Networks Face Continued Pressure
Authorities maintain that major militant leadership structures have suffered significant setbacks due to sustained security operations. Officials stated that several key commanders of terror groups have been neutralized, while logistical and support networks have been disrupted.
The crackdown on overground worker networks has also contributed to weakening militant infrastructure, security sources said. Former Jammu and Kashmir Police chief S. P. Vaid acknowledged the efforts of police and security forces, stating that persistent operations have played a major role in reducing militant recruitment and activity.
Separate Incidents Reported Along LoC
In a separate development on Sunday, security forces detained a 22-year-old resident of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after he allegedly crossed the Line of Control. Preliminary reports suggested that the individual, identified as Zeeshan Mir, entered the area in connection with a personal relationship developed through social media with a young woman from a village in Jammu and Kashmir.
On the same day, the Army also intercepted three individuals in the Uri sector of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. Officials said the group was apprehended during an alleged attempt to cross the border, and further investigation into the incident is underway.
