Monsoon – Rain and Storm Activity Set to Intensify Across India

Monsoon –  A significant shift in weather conditions is being observed across several regions of India as the southwest monsoon approaches. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds in multiple states through May 31. Meteorologists have also indicated that atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for the monsoon to advance further over the Arabian Sea and parts of the Bay of Bengal within the next few days.

Rain and Thunderstorm Alerts Issued Across Several States

According to the latest weather bulletin, a large number of states are likely to experience rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the weekend. The affected regions include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Weather officials have warned that wind speeds may range between 40 and 50 kmph in many areas. In parts of Bihar and Jharkhand, gusts could strengthen to 60 kmph, while isolated locations in Bihar may witness winds reaching nearly 70 kmph.

Heavy Rainfall Likely in Western and Central Regions

The IMD has forecast intense rainfall activity in parts of Central Maharashtra on May 30. Similar conditions are expected in the Konkan region and Goa on May 31. Gujarat may also witness episodes of heavy rainfall at isolated locations between May 31 and June 2 as moisture levels continue to rise ahead of the monsoon’s arrival.

Cooler Conditions Bring Relief to Delhi

Delhi experienced a noticeable drop in daytime temperatures under persistent cloud cover on Friday. The city recorded its lowest maximum temperature in nearly three weeks, offering relief from recent heat. Weather forecasts suggest that Delhi and neighboring northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, may continue to receive rain and thunderstorm activity over the coming days.

Rajasthan Still Faces High Temperatures

While many regions have seen changing weather patterns, Rajasthan continues to experience intense heat, with temperatures remaining in the mid-40s Celsius range. However, weather experts expect thunderstorm and rainfall activity to increase across the state, which could gradually ease the prevailing hot conditions.

Kerala Monsoon Arrival Expected Soon

The weather department has indicated that the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala within the next seven days. This development is closely monitored as it marks the official beginning of the country’s four-month rainy season.

For the June-to-September monsoon period, the IMD has estimated rainfall across India at around 90 percent of the long-term average, with a possible variation of four percent. The long-period average rainfall for the season stands at 87 centimeters, based on historical data collected between 1971 and 2020.

Rainfall Outlook for Different Regions

While northeastern states are expected to receive rainfall within the normal range, several other parts of the country could experience below-normal precipitation during the season. IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that rainfall over the country’s key rain-fed agricultural belt is likely to remain below the long-term average.

Uttar Pradesh Faces Widespread Weather Disturbances

Uttar Pradesh is expected to witness extensive rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the next two days. The IMD has cautioned residents about the possibility of lightning, hailstorms, strong winds, and localized heavy rain. Adverse weather conditions have already affected daily life in some districts, including Saharanpur, where heavy rainfall led to increased water flow from nearby hilly regions.

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand Under Weather Watch

In Himachal Pradesh, forecasts indicate a prolonged wet spell extending until June 4. Thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and occasional hailstorms are expected across several districts. The state capital and nearby areas recently experienced severe weather conditions, including heavy rain and hail.

Uttarakhand is also likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, especially in higher-altitude regions where snowfall may occur. Authorities have advised residents to remain alert due to the possibility of thunderstorms and winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph.

Eastern and Southern States Also Witness Weather Activity

Beyond northern India, powerful thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds affected Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal. Jharkhand also reported rainfall, while similar weather conditions are expected to continue in parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few days as moisture-bearing systems strengthen across the region.
