Partnership – India and Sri Lanka Strengthen Vision for Shared Economic Growth
Partnership – Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has underlined the growing importance of India-Sri Lanka economic ties, describing the island nation as a trusted partner in a common journey toward prosperity and regional development. Speaking at the Indo-Sri Lanka Economic Conference held at the India International Centre in New Delhi on Thursday, Sandhu said the relationship between the two countries has expanded far beyond traditional trade and now covers a wide range of strategic sectors.
According to the Lieutenant Governor, the partnership between India and Sri Lanka has matured over the years into a broad-based economic framework. Areas such as infrastructure development, energy cooperation, technology, tourism, education, cultural exchanges, and skill development have emerged as key pillars of engagement between the neighboring nations.
Expanding Trade and Investment Cooperation
Sandhu noted that economic engagement between the two countries has witnessed steady progress. India continues to be one of Sri Lanka’s most significant trading partners and remains among the leading sources of investment for the island nation. He said the growing commercial relationship reflects the confidence businesses and investors have in the long-term prospects of bilateral cooperation.
Referring to the India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement, he described it as an important milestone that demonstrated the benefits of regional economic integration. The agreement helped create new business opportunities, improve market access, and support stronger supply chains between the two economies.
Focus on Future-Oriented Development
The Lieutenant Governor emphasized that the next phase of India-Sri Lanka cooperation will be driven by innovation, sustainability, and long-term economic resilience. He said India’s engagement with Sri Lanka has consistently been based on mutual respect and partnership rather than dependency.
He highlighted India’s support in multiple sectors, including housing projects, transport infrastructure, railway modernization, digital public infrastructure, renewable energy initiatives, and other development programs. India, he added, has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to assisting Sri Lanka during critical periods and remains a dependable development partner.
Strategic Importance of the Indian Ocean Region
Addressing the broader regional context, Sandhu pointed to Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean. He said enhanced connectivity, improved logistics networks, and port-led development initiatives could significantly boost economic activity across the region.
According to him, stronger transportation and trade links have the potential to transform the surrounding region into an important economic corridor connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia and other global markets. Such developments could create fresh opportunities for trade, investment, and regional integration.
New Areas for Bilateral Collaboration
The conference also highlighted several sectors where cooperation can be further strengthened. These include renewable energy, digital services, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, maritime trade, logistics, tourism, education, skill development, and startup ecosystems.
Sandhu stressed that economic partnerships should ultimately improve the lives of ordinary citizens. He said both countries should prioritize inclusive growth by generating employment opportunities, supporting entrepreneurship, enhancing connectivity, and raising living standards across communities.
Commitment to Regional Stability and Growth
Against the backdrop of global economic uncertainty, the Lieutenant Governor said regional cooperation has become increasingly important. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to maintaining a stable, prosperous, and mutually beneficial partnership with Sri Lanka under the framework of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.
Concluding his remarks, Sandhu said India and Sri Lanka can serve as an example of how neighboring countries with deep historical and cultural connections can build a durable and future-ready economic relationship. He called for continued investment not only in trade and infrastructure but also in trust, understanding, and long-term collaboration that benefits the wider Indian Ocean region.
