Infrastructure – Hamirpur Bridge Collapse Triggers Rescue Efforts and Safety Review
Infrastructure – A tragic incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district claimed several lives after a portion of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa River collapsed during severe weather conditions in the early hours of Friday. Authorities have launched an extensive rescue operation while state officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

Chief Minister Expresses Condolences
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in the accident. In a message shared on social media, he conveyed his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and directed officials to ensure that rescue and relief measures are carried out without delay.
The Chief Minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and instructed district authorities to work in close coordination with emergency response teams to provide immediate assistance at the site.
Immediate Response Ordered by State Government
According to information released by the Chief Minister’s Office, the incident was taken up on priority soon after reports emerged. Senior administrative officials were directed to reach the location promptly and supervise rescue activities on the ground.
The state government has also instructed authorities to ensure that injured workers receive proper medical treatment. In addition, compensation support is expected to be provided to the families of those who lost their lives in the collapse.
Collapse Occurred During Severe Weather
Officials said the bridge was being built between Morakandar and Kandaur villages across the Betwa River. The structure reportedly gave way at around 2 a.m. when the region was experiencing heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
Several workers were believed to be resting on a section of the bridge at the time of the incident. When the structure collapsed, many became trapped beneath the concrete and construction debris, prompting an urgent rescue response.
Casualties Confirmed, Search Continues
Initial reports confirmed the deaths of at least six workers. However, officials have cautioned that the number of casualties could increase as rescue teams continue to search the wreckage for any remaining trapped individuals.
Emergency personnel have been working continuously to clear debris and identify victims. Medical teams have also been deployed to provide assistance to survivors and transport the injured to nearby healthcare facilities.
Rescue Teams Working Around the Clock
Hamirpur Additional Superintendent of Police Arvind Kumar Verma stated that authorities received information about the collapse during the night and immediately mobilized rescue teams.
He said police personnel, disaster response units, and local administration officials reached the location without delay. Rescue workers recovered multiple bodies from beneath the collapsed slab and continued operations to locate others who may still be trapped.
Safety Concerns Under Scrutiny
The accident has raised fresh questions regarding safety measures at large construction sites, particularly during periods of extreme weather. Experts and local authorities are expected to examine whether adequate precautions were in place as work progressed on the bridge project.
Meanwhile, teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district administration, and local police remain engaged in rescue and recovery efforts. Authorities have assured that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the collapse and identify any lapses that may have contributed to the tragedy.
