CongressLeadership – Baghel Defends Party Discipline Amid Karnataka Leadership Shift

CongressLeadership –  The Congress party has reaffirmed its commitment to internal discipline following the recent change in Karnataka’s leadership. Senior Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel stated on Friday that party members adhere to decisions taken by the central leadership without public disagreement, responding to criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the resignation of Siddaramaiah as Karnataka Chief Minister.

Baghel Emphasises Loyalty to Party Decisions

Speaking to journalists, Baghel said the Congress has a long-standing tradition of respecting decisions made by its leadership. He rejected BJP allegations that the leadership transition reflected divisions within the party and accused the opposition of attempting to create a misleading narrative.

According to Baghel, Congress leaders accept responsibilities assigned by the party and are expected to follow organisational decisions. He recalled facing similar questions about his own position during his tenure as Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and said he had always maintained that he would step down whenever directed by the party leadership.

Karnataka Undergoes Major Political Transition

The remarks come at a time when Karnataka is witnessing a significant political change. Siddaramaiah recently resigned from the chief minister’s post after discussions with the Congress high command. Reports indicate that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is expected to assume the state’s top executive role as part of the leadership transition.

Following his resignation, Siddaramaiah addressed the media and asserted that the Congress government remains stable. He highlighted that the party continues to hold a comfortable majority in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and retains the support of independent legislators.

BJP Questions Congress Governance

The BJP reacted strongly to the leadership change, describing it as evidence of governance failures and political instability within the ruling party.

BJP spokesperson NV Subhash alleged that Congress had not fulfilled many of the expectations it created among Karnataka voters. He claimed that the party’s administration had struggled to deliver on development promises and accused Congress leaders of prioritising internal political interests over governance.

Subhash further argued that leadership ambitions within the party had contributed to uncertainty in the state’s political environment. He also made allegations regarding the relationship between senior Congress leaders and the ongoing leadership change, claims that have not been independently verified.

Poonawalla Criticises Congress Leadership

Adding to the criticism, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned the circumstances surrounding Siddaramaiah’s departure from office. He suggested that the outgoing chief minister appeared unhappy while announcing his resignation and argued that political considerations had taken precedence over public support.

Poonawalla also raised questions about representation within Congress leadership, referring to the party’s stance on caste-related issues and comparing it with the BJP’s leadership structure at both national and state levels.

Meetings in Delhi Focus on Next Government Formation

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah arrived in New Delhi on Friday to hold consultations with senior Congress leaders, including Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The former chief minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Karnataka Congress in-charge Randeep Surjewala. Discussions are expected to focus on the formation of the next state government and the transition of responsibilities following Siddaramaiah’s resignation.

The leadership change marks an important moment for Karnataka politics, with attention now turning to the Congress party’s next steps and the structure of the incoming administration. Political observers will be closely watching how the transition unfolds and whether it strengthens the party’s position ahead of future electoral challenges.
