Archives – Historic Delhi Assembly Records From 1924-1930 Set for Public Release
Archives – A major archival project documenting the early years of India’s legislative history is set to be introduced in Delhi later this week. Officials on Tuesday confirmed that a comprehensive publication covering 407 sittings of the Central Legislative Assembly held between 1924 and 1930 will be formally released along with the inaugural edition of the Delhi Assembly’s quarterly magazine, Vidhan Chetna.

The newly prepared compilation is being viewed as an important step toward preserving rare parliamentary material that had remained largely inaccessible for decades. According to officials, the effort was undertaken by the Assembly secretariat to safeguard valuable legislative records linked to India’s democratic evolution during the pre-independence period.
Rare Parliamentary Debates Preserved
The publication contains original proceedings from debates and discussions that took place in the Central Legislative Assembly during a politically significant era. Spread across thousands of pages, the collection includes speeches delivered by several prominent national figures who played key roles in shaping India’s political landscape.
Among those featured in the records are leaders such as Madan Mohan Malaviya, Motilal Nehru, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, Madhav Shrihari Aney, and Ghanshyam Das Birla. Officials stated that the documents also recognise the contribution of Vithalbhai Patel, who became the first Indian to preside over the Assembly.
The records have reportedly been preserved in their original format to maintain historical authenticity. Researchers and scholars are expected to benefit from the material, which offers detailed insight into political debates, administrative concerns, and legislative functioning during the colonial period.
Limited Access for Decades
Officials noted that these proceedings were previously available only in restricted archival collections and were rarely accessed by the wider public. Historians and academic researchers often faced difficulty in obtaining complete versions of the documents due to limited circulation and preservation challenges.
The latest publication aims to bridge that gap by making the material more accessible for educational and institutional use. Assembly officials described the initiative as part of a broader attempt to strengthen awareness about India’s parliamentary traditions and legislative history.
The compilation has been prepared under the supervision of Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta. According to the secretariat, the project extends across 32,376 pages and has been organised into 89 separate volumes.
Vidhan Chetna Magazine to Debut
Alongside the archival release, the Delhi Assembly will also introduce the first edition of its quarterly magazine, Vidhan Chetna. Officials said the publication will include articles and commentaries contributed by parliamentarians, constitutional experts, lawmakers, and public policy observers.
The magazine is also expected to carry reports on programmes, discussions, and events conducted by the Assembly. Authorities believe the publication could serve as a platform to promote informed discussions on governance, constitutional values, and legislative processes.
Formal Launch Scheduled on May 28
The official release ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 28. According to the Assembly secretariat, the event will be attended by Om Birla and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Officials described the publication as one of the most extensive archival documentation efforts undertaken by the Delhi Assembly in recent years. The initiative is expected to support future academic research while preserving a significant chapter of India’s legislative history for coming generations.
