Heatwave – Nandankanan Zoo Expands Summer Protection Measures Amid Rising Temperatures

Heatwave – The administration of Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar has strengthened its summer preparedness plan as Odisha continues to face extreme temperatures. Zoo authorities have introduced a series of heat-relief measures for animals and visitors to reduce the impact of the ongoing heat wave across the state.

The zoo management said the arrangements were designed after assessing the needs of different species housed inside the park. Officials confirmed that cooling systems, additional water facilities, shaded areas, and modified diets are now part of the seasonal management plan aimed at ensuring animal welfare during peak summer conditions.

Species-Specific Cooling Arrangements Introduced

Odisha Deputy Director Pradeep Mirase stated that Nandankanan Zoological Park is home to nearly 169 species and around 4,000 animals. According to him, preparations for the summer season began well before temperatures started rising sharply in the region.

He explained that separate arrangements have been made depending on the requirements of each species. Large carnivores such as tigers, lions, leopards, and bears have been provided with shaded resting areas, water pools, and ponds inside their enclosures to help them remain cool during the daytime heat.

The zoo has also installed foggers and mist spray systems in animal enclosures to lower surrounding temperatures and improve comfort for wildlife. Officials said these systems are being operated regularly throughout the day, especially during afternoon hours when temperatures remain at their highest.

Special Summer Diets for Primates and Birds

Authorities said primates are receiving additional water-rich fruits along with their regular meals to prevent dehydration. Sprinklers and mist systems have also been added in areas where monkeys and other primates are housed.

The zoo administration further noted that bird enclosures have been equipped with sufficient water sources to help birds cope with the harsh weather. Cooling spots and extra water arrangements have also been made for ground-dwelling birds to minimise heat stress.

Officials added that animal health teams are continuously monitoring the behaviour and physical condition of the animals to quickly address any signs of heat-related illness.

Visitor Safety Measures Enhanced Across the Zoo

Along with animal protection efforts, the zoo administration has expanded facilities for visitors arriving during the summer season. Multiple drinking water points have been installed across the campus, with chilled water available in several locations.

Pradeep Mirase said the management is prepared to increase water supply if visitor numbers rise during holidays or weekends. Fans have also been installed in waiting and gathering areas to improve ventilation for tourists.

To offer additional relief from the intense heat, mist foggers have been placed at entry gates and other crowded sections inside the zoo. Officials believe these arrangements will help reduce discomfort for visitors spending long hours outdoors.

Odisha Continues to Face Severe Heat Wave Conditions

The intensified summer arrangements at Nandankanan come as Odisha remains under severe heat wave conditions. The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for several districts, warning that extreme temperatures are likely to continue through at least May 28.

Districts including Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bolangir, and Boudh are among the worst affected regions. According to weather officials, Jharsuguda recorded 45.2 degrees Celsius on Monday, making it the hottest location in the state so far this season.

Meteorological officials said temperatures in several districts are currently running three to four degrees Celsius above normal levels. Authorities have advised people to avoid outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. due to the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Coastal Areas Also Facing Humid Conditions

Apart from dry heat in western Odisha, coastal districts such as Cuttack and Puri are witnessing high humidity levels. In Puri, local fire service teams have reportedly deployed water mist systems near the Jagannath Temple to provide relief to devotees visiting the shrine during the hot weather.

Health officials have urged vulnerable groups, including children, elderly citizens, and people with chronic illnesses, to remain cautious during the ongoing heat wave.
