Agriculture Loans – The Tamil Nadu government’s recent decision to waive crop loans for small and marginal farmers has received support from PMK founder S. Ramadoss, who described the move as a timely effort to ease the pressure on the agricultural community. At the same time, he urged the state administration to introduce wider assistance programs to address the deeper financial problems affecting farmers across the state.

Government Announces Crop Loan Relief

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ramadoss welcomed the government’s announcement to waive cooperative crop loans of up to Rs 50,000 that were taken from May last year onwards. He said the measure would provide immediate support to thousands of farmers who have been struggling with financial stress caused by agricultural losses and rising cultivation expenses.

He also appreciated the government’s decision to extend partial benefits to farmers with higher loan amounts. Under the current scheme, farmers holding crop loans between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh through cooperative societies will receive partial waivers ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 40,000 depending on their loan category.

According to Ramadoss, the initiative may not fully remove the burden faced by every farmer, but it sends a positive message to the agricultural sector during a difficult period.

Farmers Continue to Face Economic Challenges

Highlighting the broader situation in rural areas, Ramadoss said farmers are dealing with several ongoing challenges that have weakened agricultural income over the past few years. He pointed to repeated natural calamities, increasing prices of farming materials, and poor returns for agricultural produce as major concerns affecting cultivation activities.

He stressed that many farming families continue to struggle despite existing welfare measures, making it necessary for the government to consider stronger and more comprehensive relief programs. He said such measures would help improve financial stability in the agricultural sector and prevent farmers from falling deeper into debt.

Demand for Subsidised Agricultural Inputs

The PMK leader further requested the state government to ensure uninterrupted access to essential farming inputs through cooperative societies. He said seeds, fertilisers, and other cultivation-related materials should be supplied at subsidised rates so that farmers can reduce production costs and continue farming without additional financial strain.

Ramadoss noted that timely availability of agricultural resources is critical for maintaining productivity and supporting seasonal cultivation. He added that cooperative institutions play an important role in strengthening rural farming activities and should be equipped to support farmers more effectively.

Call for Fresh Crop Loans Without Delays

Another major concern raised by Ramadoss was the need to provide fresh crop loans to farmers who benefit from the waiver scheme. He said the government should ensure that eligible farmers are not denied new loans after receiving relief under the current program.

According to him, delays or administrative hurdles in sanctioning new loans could negatively affect agricultural operations, especially during important cultivation periods. He urged authorities to simplify procedures and ensure smooth financial assistance through cooperative societies.

Appeal to Extend Relief Beyond Small Farmers

Ramadoss also appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to examine the possibility of extending partial loan relief to farmers outside the small and marginal categories. He said several medium-scale farmers are also experiencing severe financial hardship and require government support to sustain agricultural activities.

Emphasising the importance of agriculture to the state economy, he said protecting farmers and improving rural livelihoods should remain a top priority for the government. He added that long-term farmer-friendly policies are necessary to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s agricultural sector and secure the future of farming communities.
