Education Crisis – Latur Student Death Raises Fresh Concerns Over NEET Pressure
Education Crisis – An 18-year-old student from Maharashtra’s Latur district allegedly died by suicide after reportedly facing severe emotional distress linked to the cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 examination amid the ongoing paper leak controversy.

The student, identified as Maithili Ashok Sonwane from Gondegaon village, was preparing for a medical career and had appeared for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET-UG) conducted on May 3. According to police officials, the incident took place on the morning of May 16.
Family Alleges Exam Cancellation Deepened Emotional Stress
Maithili’s father, Ashok Vitthal Sonwane, a farmer, submitted a statement to the police on Sunday claiming that his daughter had been mentally disturbed after the National Testing Agency cancelled the examination following allegations of a question paper leak.
He stated that Maithili had spent months preparing for the highly competitive medical entrance test and believed she had performed well. However, the uncertainty created by the cancellation reportedly left her anxious and emotionally exhausted.
According to the family’s statement, the teenager had frequently expressed concern about her future and feared the impact of the re-examination on her career plans. Her father alleged that she struggled to cope with the stress caused by the situation.
Police Begin Investigation Into Circumstances
Police officials confirmed that an accidental death report has been registered and an investigation is underway to examine the claims made by the family.
Authorities said they are recording statements and collecting details related to the case. Officials have not yet released further findings regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing pressure faced by students preparing for competitive examinations across the country.
NEET-UG Cancellation Triggered Nationwide Debate
The National Testing Agency announced on May 12 that the NEET-UG 2026 examination held earlier in the month had been cancelled after allegations of a paper leak surfaced in several regions.
The examination is one of India’s largest entrance tests for undergraduate medical admissions and is taken by students seeking admission to MBBS and other medical courses. This year, nearly 23 lakh candidates had registered for the exam.
Following the cancellation, authorities scheduled a fresh examination for June 21. The development sparked concern among students and parents, many of whom raised questions about exam security and the mental burden caused by repeated uncertainty.
Growing Mental Health Concerns Among Students
Education experts and mental health professionals have repeatedly highlighted the emotional pressure associated with high-stakes entrance examinations in India. Long preparation periods, intense competition, and uncertainty regarding exam processes often create significant psychological strain on students.
In recent years, several incidents involving student stress have renewed calls for stronger counselling systems and emotional support mechanisms in educational institutions and coaching centres.
Parents and educators have also urged authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in examination systems to avoid unnecessary anxiety among candidates.
The latest incident from Latur has intensified discussions around student well-being and the responsibility of institutions conducting large-scale national examinations.
