Diplomacy – Akie Abe Recalls Shinzo Abe’s Enduring Bond With India
Diplomacy – Akie Abe, the widow of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, recently visited the Indian Embassy in Tokyo and reflected on her late husband’s close relationship with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During her interaction with Indian Ambassador Nagma M Mallick, she shared memories of the strong personal and diplomatic ties that connected the two nations during Shinzo Abe’s leadership.

Tribute to a Longstanding India-Japan Partnership
The Indian Embassy in Tokyo described the meeting as a special occasion and praised Shinzo Abe’s contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Japan. In a message shared on social media platform X, the embassy called Abe one of Japan’s most influential leaders and remembered him as a trusted friend of India.
Ambassador Nagma M Mallick told Akie Abe that people in India continue to hold deep respect for the former Japanese leader and remember his efforts in expanding cooperation between the two countries. During the discussion, Akie Abe also spoke about her social work and initiatives focused on supporting young people and charitable causes.
Personal Friendship Between Modi and Abe
Akie Abe highlighted the personal understanding and warmth shared by Shinzo Abe and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a public event in Tokyo last year, she had said that her husband’s connection with India was not limited to official diplomacy.
According to her, the friendship between the two leaders was built on genuine trust and mutual respect. She recalled that even a simple exchange of smiles between the two leaders reflected their close understanding. Akie Abe also expressed her wish to continue supporting values and causes that were important to her husband during his lifetime.
Shinzo Abe’s Role in Bilateral Relations
Shinzo Abe played a major role in taking India-Japan ties to a higher strategic level. During his tenure, the relationship between the two countries evolved into a Special Strategic and Global Partnership, with cooperation expanding in areas such as trade, defence, infrastructure, and regional security.
His association with Narendra Modi began years before Modi became Prime Minister of India. The two leaders first connected when Modi was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, and the relationship later developed into one of the most recognised international political friendships in recent years.
Abe consistently placed strong importance on ties with India and encouraged closer engagement between Tokyo and New Delhi as part of a broader vision for stability and growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
India’s Response After Abe’s Death
Following Shinzo Abe’s assassination in 2022 during an election campaign speech in Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and described the former Japanese leader as one of his closest friends. Modi also travelled to Japan to attend Abe’s state funeral, underlining the significance of their personal and diplomatic bond.
In his tribute, Modi praised Abe as a respected global leader who worked throughout his political career to improve both Japan and the international community. India also announced a one-day national mourning period as a mark of respect after Abe’s death.
Lasting Impact on Regional Diplomacy
Shinzo Abe remains one of Japan’s most influential post-war leaders and served as the country’s longest-serving prime minister. He first held office from 2006 to 2007 and later returned to power from 2012 to 2020.
During those years, Abe focused heavily on strengthening international partnerships, with India becoming one of Japan’s most important strategic allies in Asia. His efforts helped create stronger political, economic, and cultural ties that continue to shape relations between the two nations today.
Akie Abe’s recent visit to the Indian Embassy served as a reminder of the lasting friendship built between India and Japan under Shinzo Abe’s leadership and the personal bond he shared with Prime Minister Modi.
