Ebola –    India has stepped up monitoring and precautionary health checks for international passengers after concerns over the spread of Ebola in several African countries prompted heightened global alertness.

Ebola india strengthens airport screening after global health emergency alert

Indian health authorities have issued a fresh advisory for passengers arriving from or passing through countries currently affected by Ebola outbreaks. The directive asks travellers showing symptoms or having any history of exposure to report immediately to airport health officials before completing immigration procedures.

Advisory Issued for High-Risk Countries

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has identified the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan as high-risk nations based on classifications released by the World Health Organization (WHO). The advisory has been displayed prominently at Delhi airport through the Airport Health Organisation (APHO) to increase awareness among incoming travellers.

Officials have advised passengers to remain alert for symptoms commonly linked to Ebola infection. These include fever, severe weakness, headaches, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat, and unexplained bleeding. Travellers experiencing any of these conditions have been urged to seek medical assistance without delay.

Instructions for Travellers With Exposure History

Passengers who may have come into direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of a suspected or confirmed Ebola patient have been specifically instructed to inform airport health authorities immediately upon arrival. Health desks at airports are monitoring such cases closely as part of precautionary surveillance efforts.

According to APHO guidelines, travellers who begin to experience symptoms within 21 days after entering India should seek urgent medical attention and disclose their recent travel history to healthcare professionals. Authorities believe early reporting will help reduce the risk of possible transmission and support timely containment measures if required.

Centre Reviews Preparedness Measures Nationwide

Amid growing international concern, Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava chaired a high-level meeting on Wednesday with health secretaries from states and Union territories to assess preparedness and emergency response systems related to Ebola.

During the review, officials discussed screening arrangements, quarantine readiness, laboratory testing capabilities, referral systems, and treatment protocols. The Centre has already circulated detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to all states and Union territories to ensure uniform preparedness across the country.

No Ebola Cases Reported in India

Government officials clarified that no Ebola infection has been detected in India so far. However, the Centre has intensified surveillance as a preventive measure after the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

Sources within the health ministry stated that surveillance systems at airports and healthcare facilities are being strengthened to quickly identify and manage any potential threat. Authorities are also coordinating with multiple ministries and departments to improve response mechanisms and public health preparedness.

Focus on Prevention and Public Awareness

Health experts continue to emphasise that preventive vigilance remains the most effective strategy against Ebola outbreaks. Public health teams have been asked to maintain strict monitoring procedures while ensuring rapid communication between hospitals, laboratories, and airport authorities.

Officials said awareness campaigns and precautionary advisories are being used to educate travellers and healthcare workers about the importance of reporting symptoms early. The government has maintained that the current measures are precautionary and aimed at ensuring public safety while keeping the healthcare system prepared for any possible emergency.
