Census – Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh Begin Major Digital Population Survey
Census – Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have officially launched the long-awaited census process, marking an important step in updating population records and improving administrative planning across the two Union Territories.

The exercise was formally announced by Amit Sharma, Chief Principal Census Officer and Director of Census Operations for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Officials confirmed that the newly introduced self-enumeration phase began on May 17 and witnessed encouraging public participation on its opening day.
Online Self-Enumeration Process Begins
The latest census initiative introduces a digital self-enumeration system designed to make data collection faster and more accurate. Through the online platform, residents can independently submit household and demographic information in a secure manner without waiting for officials to visit their homes initially.
According to Sharma, the administration recorded substantial progress immediately after the portal became operational. He noted that the online method is expected to simplify one of the country’s largest administrative exercises while reducing errors often associated with manual data entry.
The self-enumeration model is also intended to strengthen transparency and improve citizen participation in the nationwide census operation. Officials believe the digital format will help streamline the collection of social, cultural, and economic data across urban and remote regions alike.
Verification Drive Scheduled for Early June
After the completion of the online submission stage, field officials will begin physical verification of the details provided by residents. Census enumerators are expected to conduct door-to-door verification between June 1 and June 3.
During these visits, officials will cross-check information submitted through the self-enumeration portal and correct any discrepancies if required. Authorities stated that the final data will only be locked after confirmation from residents.
Sharma urged citizens to cooperate with visiting officials to ensure that the information collected remains accurate and reliable. The administration emphasized that public participation is critical for maintaining the integrity of the census process.
Ladakh Administration Encourages Public Participation
Earlier this week, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena also inaugurated the Self-Enumeration Portal for Census 2027 in the Union Territory. He described the launch as the formal beginning of the census operation in Ladakh and appealed to residents to actively participate over the next 15 days.
In a public message, Saxena highlighted the importance of census data in policy formation, infrastructure planning, and resource allocation. He stated that active public involvement would help ensure that Ladakh’s regional identity, developmental priorities, and population requirements are accurately represented in national records.
Officials said the exercise is especially important for geographically sensitive and strategically significant regions such as Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, where updated demographic information can assist long-term governance and development planning.
Census 2027 to Feature Digital Integration
The upcoming Census 2027 will be India’s 16th census since the exercise began and the eighth after Independence. Authorities have introduced stronger digital systems and enhanced data security measures as part of the modernization effort.
The Union government has approved an estimated budget of Rs 11,718.24 crore for conducting the nationwide exercise. The census will take place in two stages, beginning with house listing operations from April to September 2026. Population enumeration is expected to follow in February 2027.
Officials explained that census operations involve collecting, compiling, analyzing, and distributing demographic, economic, and social information relating to every individual within the country or designated regions.
Importance of Census Data in Governance
Government authorities described census findings as one of the most valuable sources of information for administrators, planners, researchers, and policymakers. Accurate census data supports decisions related to welfare schemes, public infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development.
The administration further noted that updated population information helps governments design inclusive policies tailored to the diverse needs of different communities and regions. Officials added that reliable data remains essential for balanced governance and long-term national planning.
