Technology – Modi’s Europe and Gulf Tour Deepens India’s Global Partnerships
Technology – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent five-nation diplomatic visit has strengthened India’s international partnerships across trade, technology, defence, and sustainable development, according to former Foreign Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla. The tour, conducted between May 15 and May 20, covered the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy at a time when geopolitical tensions continue to affect several regions around the world.

UAE Reaffirms Strategic Confidence in India
Shringla said the Prime Minister’s visit to the United Arab Emirates carried major significance because it highlighted the strong level of trust between the two countries despite economic and security challenges in the Gulf region. The UAE announced plans to invest nearly $5 billion in India, signaling continued confidence in India’s long-term economic outlook.
He also noted that discussions on a new defence cooperation framework could expand military and strategic collaboration between the two nations in the coming years. Alongside defence ties, both countries are working to increase trade opportunities and strengthen broader economic engagement.
According to Shringla, the UAE has become one of India’s key partners in the Gulf region, with cooperation steadily growing in investment, infrastructure, and strategic sectors.
Netherlands Expands Technology and Climate Cooperation
During the Netherlands visit, India focused heavily on advanced technology partnerships and climate-related collaboration. Shringla stated that the Dutch government has already played a role in India’s semiconductor ecosystem and is now looking to deepen its involvement further.
The partnership is expected to support India’s ambitions in semiconductor manufacturing and supply chain development. In addition, the Netherlands is likely to assist India with expertise related to renewable energy systems and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Shringla described the Netherlands as a valuable partner because of its technological strengths and experience in sustainable development initiatives. He said the cooperation would support India’s long-term goals in clean energy and industrial modernization.
Nordic Countries Open New Opportunities
The former diplomat also emphasized the importance of Prime Minister Modi’s outreach to Northern European countries, particularly Sweden and Norway. He pointed out that an Indian Prime Minister visiting Norway after more than four decades reflects a major shift in diplomatic engagement between the two sides.
The Nordic nations are expected to work closely with India in areas linked to green technology, clean energy innovation, green hydrogen, and artificial intelligence-based renewable systems. Shringla said these partnerships could lead to increased investment flows from Europe into India’s sustainable technology sectors.
He added that Sweden and the Netherlands have maintained stable economic ties with India for many years, but the current visit has elevated these relationships to a much higher level. India’s cooperation with Nordic countries is now moving beyond traditional trade and entering sectors connected to future technologies and sustainability.
Norway Seen as Major Investment Partner
Speaking specifically about Norway, Shringla described the country as a major source of global investment capital and advanced technology expertise. He said Norway possesses strong financial resources and is well-positioned to increase investments in India’s green growth sectors.
The discussions reportedly focused on renewable energy expansion, sustainable development, and emerging technologies. India is also expected to benefit from Norway’s experience in environmental innovation and energy management.
Shringla observed that several Northern European countries are increasingly viewing India as a reliable and stable economic partner during a period of global uncertainty.
India’s Global Standing Gains Momentum
According to Shringla, one of the most important outcomes of the tour is the changing perception of India on the world stage. He said many countries now see India as a dependable nation capable of delivering economic stability, technological progress, and long-term growth even during periods of international conflict and instability.
He added that the tour helped strengthen India’s position in critical sectors such as semiconductor supply chains, defence cooperation, clean energy partnerships, and international investment.
The former Foreign Secretary concluded that the Prime Minister’s engagements across Europe and the Gulf region have reinforced India’s image as a trusted global partner for future economic and strategic cooperation.
