Hockey – Jharkhand Athletes and Medical Sector Receive Major Development Push
Hockey – Jharkhand is witnessing significant progress across sports, medical education, and cricket development, with fresh announcements bringing optimism to athletes, students, and sports followers across the state.

Jharkhand Players Earn Places in Indian Women’s Hockey Squad
Three women hockey players from Jharkhand have been selected for India’s upcoming tour of Australia, adding another milestone to the state’s growing contribution to national sports. Experienced midfielder Salima Tete has been named captain of the Indian women’s hockey team for the international series, while Nikki Pradhan and Deepika Soreng have also secured places in the squad.
The Indian side is scheduled to play a four-match series in Perth between May 26 and May 30. The inclusion of the three Jharkhand players has been warmly welcomed by sports lovers and members of the hockey community across the state.
Salima Tete’s appointment as captain is being viewed as recognition of her consistent performances and leadership qualities over recent years. Nikki Pradhan, known for her defensive strength, and Deepika Soreng, who has impressed with her energetic performances, are also expected to play important roles during the Australia tour.
Sports officials and local hockey supporters believe the achievement reflects the steady rise of women’s hockey talent emerging from Jharkhand. The state has produced several national-level athletes over the years, especially in tribal and rural regions where hockey remains deeply popular.
Centre Approves Increase in Medical Seats
Jharkhand has also received a major boost in the healthcare and education sectors after the Central government approved a substantial increase in MBBS and postgraduate medical seats in key institutions.
At Shaheed Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital in Dhanbad, MBBS seat capacity has been expanded from 100 to 250. MGM Medical College has also been granted approval for a significant increase in undergraduate medical seats, aimed at strengthening medical education opportunities within the state.
Officials stated that the expansion is expected to improve access to medical studies for students from Jharkhand while also helping address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the region.
As part of the project, financial assistance worth Rs 225 crore has been sanctioned for infrastructure development and seat expansion work. Out of the total amount, the Central government will contribute Rs 135 crore. The remaining share will be managed through state-level support and institutional arrangements.
Authorities believe the upgraded infrastructure and increased intake capacity will improve both academic facilities and healthcare services linked to these institutions. The move is also expected to reduce the pressure on students seeking medical education outside the state.
Jharkhand Prepares for Its First Franchise T20 League
In another major development, Jharkhand is preparing to launch its first franchise-based professional T20 cricket tournament. The inaugural edition of the competition is expected to begin during the first week of June.
The Jharkhand State Cricket Association has authorised SJ Uplift to organise and operate the league under a seven-year agreement. The initiative marks the beginning of a franchise-style cricket structure in the state, similar to professional leagues conducted in other parts of the country.
According to preliminary plans, the first season will feature six men’s teams. Alongside the men’s competition, a women’s league involving three teams is also expected to be conducted to encourage female participation in professional cricket.
Organisers believe the tournament will create greater exposure for emerging cricketers from Jharkhand and provide them with a stronger platform to showcase their abilities. The league is also expected to support talent identification and long-term cricket development within the state.
To attract wider public participation, entry for spectators will remain free during all matches. Officials hope the move will help increase fan engagement and build a stronger sporting culture around domestic cricket competitions in Jharkhand.
